Noticed a squeak from drivers front wheel, figure it the brakes but they were done just 16K ago.. Anyway I pull wheel and inspect.. noticed inside of tire had a wear mark all the way around, and noticed what I guess is the upper ball joint was rubbed clean on the outside edge, it doesnt touch (obviously) under normal circumstances or when I cut the wheels either way in park. What could be causing this? Bad ball joints? Bad shocks? My non stock tires (255/70), under heavy turning, potholes, etc? I think the squeak was the brakes, and is unrelated.
You didn't say whether the noise happened all the time or just when going over uneven pavement or when the brakes are not applied.
You really should check the ball joints just in case they're ready to fail. That's nasty!.
AL.
I can hear the noise with or without braking, as well as when spinning the wheel manually while I had the front raised up, so its associated with the wheel turning.
There was a very tiny bit of play in the wheel when I checked it on the lift, but there is no noticable shaking or vibration on the road.
Regarding ball joints, do I have to replace the control arms or is there a way just to replace the joint? I recall this being discussed before but I couldnt find it..
