You might check out some of the crate engines offered in the 2002 F.R.P.P. catalog. They are kind of pricey, however. If you want to stay under that $3,000 limit, they list #M-6007-F50 5.0L/302 Mustang long block assembly at $2,895.It has 225bhp&9.0:1 compression. The 302 GT-40 iron head long block assembly(#M-6007-A52)has 270bhp&9.0:1 compression for a $2,995 list price. They also offer two 302 GT-40,aluminum head long block assemblies with 315-320bhp&345bhp which both list for $3,195.You might consider one of these 302s.In their catalog, they also offer many different short block assemblies, you might also consider starting to build with. The 351s,392,460s&514 crate engines they also offer make serious power, but they are way more expensive than $3,000.
Yes,the 302 GT-40 345bhp engine is a really good choice, and you've found one at less cost than listed in the catalog.Part # M-6007-XB3 is for vehicles with manual transmissions, and # M-6007-XE3 is for both automatic ,or manuals. The XB3 version comes with #M-6250-B303 cam&the XE3 version comes with #M-6250-E303 cam.The cam in the XB3 version 224 degrees of duration@.050" on both intake&exhaust, with .480" valve lift on both intake&exhaust. The cam in the XE3 version has 220 degrees duration@.050" on both, and .498" lift on both.It comes mostly complete, but you'll need to add headers, induction&throttle body(or carb). You should call their techline,or write to them to see if you need any other stuff/changes.It is built using all new parts,so $3,099 sounds about right for what you'd be getting.
If i remember right, one of those is more for a manual and the other for a automatic but correct if i'm wrong. I think if I do get a crate enigne thats what it will be unless I can find a 351w crate with the same power or I might the cleveland I have and send that much on it.
They list #M-6007-XB3 as being for manual applications, but #M-6007-XE3 is for either a manual,or an automatic. To step up to a 351W crate engine will get you either 360bhp,or 385bhp if you get one from F.R.P.P.,but they cost a lot more money. I'd stick with one of the GT-40 302 engines if you don't want to spend more money. All the 351s they list retail for $5,200.The 392cid stroker 351 engine lists for $6,295.That engine is REALLY nice!!! Try 430bhp@5,500rpm&450 ft.-lbs. of torque@4,000rpm!I'll bet that 392-incher would spin the tires.
currently there is a 460 crate/long block on ebay. i did contac the builder/seller and they are willing to build what ever you would like. seem like they have a reasonable price quaility motor. just check out what they put in the auction listing on ebay and see for yourself.
