I had seen an Escape XLS on cars.com or someplace similar that was listed with a V6 engine, and figured the seller either was cluless, or it was a type-o. Today, I pulled up next to what had XLS on the back of it, but V6 decals on the front quarterpanel. So here's my question:
Is there such a thing as an XLS model with a V6? I thought only XLT or Limited was a V6.
I have never seen reference to it's availablity on Ford's website, or any ohter place. All I know is that if it's possible to get a V6 paired with a manual tranny, I'm all over it!
according to my Escape brochure, XLS are all 4 cylinder. Maybe that driver just buy a V6 decal and stick it to their car.
Ford must have been trying really really hard try to keep the cost down. My 05 XLT is a V6, but it doesn't even comes with a V6 decal.
I think it's wierd that it was never advertised as available. I have been snooping around every site i could find for at least 2 years lusting after a new escape, and never have seen mentioned the V6 offered on the XLS, It was never listed as an option, far as I can tell. Does yours have a manual tranny, bananaboat? Cuz I may start trolling the used market if I could find that combo for a decent price. The gotta be pretty uncommon, though. the only difference i can see with the 05's as far as options is the XLS Automatic. Here I was all set to buy a Mercury Mariner in a couple of months!
The company just wants you to upgrade for the money. XLS comes with no options, either. i want the bigger OWL tires and Mach audio, too, but you can't get them unless you get XLT or Limited, which cost $5000 more. I also really just want a V6 paired with a manual tranny, because I loved that combination in my 93 ranger. But manuals are getting harder to find, especially with a larger engine in smaller vehicles. I don't want a big road hog pickup, and I have outgrown the Ranger. There is my personal dilemma. I hate settling for less than exactly what I want, especially when it regards a siginficant portion of my monthly income!
All V6s have an auto tranny. It has power everything (except seats), no mach radio, no moon roof, no leather, no dark window tint, and 15" tires. All for about $4k less. I drive 35k miles a year so by the time I get rid of my vehicles (around 200k miles), they're all worth just a few thousand no matter the package level. It also came with the back cargo cover, clothes hook and cargo rack which are now options.
I haven't looked at the 2005 s to see if the V6 is an option in the XLS. They didn't sell very many 4 banger XLS Escapes until they upgraded to a decent size engine this year (150+hp). In 2002, I didn't have a problem finding an XLS V6.
I worked on 2 XLS V6's today. One was a 01 and the other an 02.
I just took a look on Ford's site and, unless I missed it, it doesn't look like you can get a V6 XLS for 05.
Thanks guys.
I think I will just continue to wait for Mariner production to begin. That's a cheaper way to avoid the MIC side cladding. OOOH, and 2-tone leather seats. I can't wait till I can testdrive one at a local stealership and compare it to Escape. Should handle exactly the same. I'm just hoping it doesn't look all gangsta with the chrome accents and stuff. It's like getting a Limited for $3000 less.
After 148,000 miles, I've had no transmision problems, except for a rumbling every once in a while while accellorating, but I just have to let up off the gas for half a second and the noise will go away.
My only major problems were an 'exhaust D/P valve' at 60k and ignition coils going out......The #2 at 84k, #6 at 121k, and # 5 at 138k
If the rumbling is at around 45mph just before the torque converter kicks, I'd be worried...if not, then it's probably something "normal". I've got almost 73k and the only problem has been the sticky throttle body which I brushed at 45k miles. The driver's side stabilizer link has a ball joint going but that's easy to fix.
My COP system is okay at this point. I had around 150k on my F150 COP system and the coils were still going strong at that point. The Escape is 2 years old this month so we'll see what the next 2 years and another 70k+ miles brings.

Hello yes there is such a thing as a 2001 XLS with a v-6 because I own one. I ordered it from the factory and it's equipped with an automatic. It was an option for any escape so you're very misinformed if you think otherwise. I now have 60k on it and heavn't had any problems with it except for two sets of front brake pads and one set of rotors. I'm getting ready to have my transmission flushed since reading this forum as mine is starting to act sluggish going up small hills.
