Odd stalling, with trouble restarting

We recently purchased a 2001 Escape XLT V6 at an insurance auction. The vehicle had been in a very light roll and only had 10,000 miles on it, and we got it for a steal. After the body work had been done it was as good as new. It drove straight and strong and didn't have any sqweaks or creaks.

After we had put about 3,000 miles on it, we had a stalling episode. My was was driving about 75mph (on cruise) and the engine just slowly lost power and quit. She pulled over and tried to restart it, but with no luck. When I arrived 1/2 hour later, I also tried to start it. Initially, it would turn over fine but kill immediately after. It seemed as if it was not getting any fuel. After a few tries I floored the accelerator and let it turn over for about 5 seconds. It then started and I drove it home. At home, I restarted it with no problems and it idled and drive fine. I did notice that in park, if I reved the engine to 4,000 rpm it would shake and not rev any higher.

I drove it the following day on a few short test runs with no issues. Then, two days after the initail stall, it stalled again. This time I had the cruise on before coming to a stop sign, and after stopping it died while accelarating at about 25mph. This time, it would start, but not accelerate. Even with flooring the accelerator, it would only run at 1,200rpm, 5mph. So I went and installed a new fuel filter, but got the same results. Then I went and got my F-150 to tow it home (only 1-2 miles) and when I returned about 2 hrs later, it started up and drove home without issue.

Any thoughts? Fuel pump? Is the cruise control somehow involved? I've read threads on this site about other stalls and sticking accelerators, is this related? I'd like to troubleshoot it a bit more before taking it to a shop or dealer. Its not under warrently but that's the risk you take when you deal with a salvage title (though paying less than 1/2 price is nice!).

Thanks in advance. Let me know if more details are needed.

I would pull the EGR valve to make sure that it isn't inhaling broken catalyst material from the catalytic converter. I assume that the MIL light wasn't set so no DT codes are available. While you are at it, you could clean the throttle body and IAC.

The PCM limits revs to 4000 in neutral or park and around 6000 in gear.
