nrkmann, this is not a gas vs diesel debate so please don't turn it into one. The numbers you quoted are MSRP, and noone in their right mind pays close to MSRP anymore. Also, 15% is a dream in the current market and is certainly not the yearly average. A lot of V10 owners buy their vehicle for ego as well. For that matter, I'd be willing to bet that the majority of people that currently own a pickup truck don't need one. It's a matter of personal choice. Even with the scenario you provided, most people will still break even by 100K miles. Of course I can always invest the money I save when I don't have to fill up my truck compared to a gas engine and invest that as well. If you tow or haul, the break even point is even lower. Not only that, the diesel will last much longer and commands a higher resale value than a comperable gas engine. I tow about 18-20 hours/week am very thankful for the low end power and economy I have over a gas engine. There's no comparison and I wouldn't even consider a gas engine with my current driving habits.
