O.K. I now have the entire steering column out of the truck.New problem! The housing that the key/lock cylinder slides into will not come off the top end of the steering column. I have removed the turn signal switch screws, the key alarm buzzer screw, the snap ring, bearing and gear that turn the upper actuator and the screws that attach the key/lock cylinder housing to the upper shaft. On the side of the housing that the turn signal arm screws into the turn signal switch there is something holding the housing to the upper end of the shaft. I and everyone else I know, almost, have looked at this and can find nothing visible holding this housing on. If anyone out there knows how to get this *#!@$&*# off please tell me. BTW I am trying to replace the Lower Actuator that attaches to the ignition rod that goes down the steering column to the ignition switch, the electrical switch.
did you loosten the 2 nuts that atach the housing to the column? they are on pivots that swing out when you loosen them, should be 7/16 ot 3/8 one on the left and one on the right. At least on my 79 they are like that.
If you take a screw driver and insert it thru the turn signal arm opening in the housing and gently pry up on the housing, using the upper casting of the steering column for leverage, the housing will slide right up and expose all the good stuff. Now if I can just get all this stuff back together.
If anybody out there gets ready to do a Lower Actuator replacement on the ignition, just post up with questions. I got mine fixed today. Its a PITA but it is doable.
