Question----How do the auto-locking hubs disengage on a 98 f-150. It is my understanding that after the vehicle is out of four wheel drive you simply need to back up. Is this a correct procedure? If this is, after the procedure has taken place, should the drive shafts to each front wheel continue to rotate?
Dave, They told me, at the dealership, when I bought my 4X4 Ranger, to back up about ten feet after I disengage the four wheel drive. So it should be the same for an F-150. As for the axles, I think (not sure) that if the 4X4, and the front hubs, are disengaged, only the rear axles will turn.
the hubs in 97/00 f150's disengage by vacuum when
switched back to 2wd either by switch or shift lever for man. shift. rangers before 98 and f150's
before 97 required the back up 10 feet procedure.
Technically the hubs don't disconnect. There is an axle diconnect, a collar slides over and engages the axle shaft. When you go to 2 wheel drive it disconnects.
There is nothing going on at the hubs. You don't have to back up to disconnect.
My 98 has manual engagement but you could feel it kick in and out on my 97 with the electic shift.
