I know everyone heards this one before. But I have a unique situation. I am going to be installing my FE352 into my truck and I dont want to get a ticket from a cop with nothing better to do. So I figured instead of running open headers like I really want I would just put a muffler on so I dont get tickets. However I am on a really tight budget so I dont know what to do. Should I just go with some cheapo glasspacks from autozone, or should I spend $65 a piece on flowmasters? Do they really sound that good? I want this to be LOUD so loud it blows the hat off a nearby pedieatran. I want to be able to hear this thing roar all the time with no need to install a radio. So whats the best thing to do?
You get what you pay for, glasspacks arent the greatest. If you want it that loud, your gonna get a ticket anyway. you get a ticket for volume, not whether you have a muffler or not.
i just got done putting headers on my 352 and am in the same quandry. My solution - buy the cheap ones (Purple Hornies for me! ), run em for a while, and if they just don't cut it, then i'll look at Flowmasters. Actually, i'm with you, loud is good - i think i'll prefer the glasspacks anyway. But, the other issue i've got is whether or not to put an H-pipe in. Jegs has got them pretty cheap (about $35) and, from what i read, they're supposed to help equalize bank pressure and give a more 'balanced' sound, whatever that means. Anyone got any experience with crossover pipes? Are they worth spending $??
From what I have heard, H-pipes quiet your exhaust considerably. Some people say that adding an H-pipe "allows each of your mufflers to run on all cylinders, instead of only 1/2 of them." This is supposed to give a better sound, but will probably quiet it down. Good Luck!
Spend the money and get an X-pipe, not an H-pipe....look at the two designs you will understand why the x-pipe flows better. And if anything, it will make each pipe louder running on 8 instead of a ricer 4 banger. With out one it will just crackle and pop so loud ppl will think it is a drive by...its so ghetto with out one. But you said you like it loud.
And glasspacks are hardly loud, the only time you will hear a glass pack is under FULL throttle when it starts to crackle and make ruckous. You can hardly hear it idling on true duals. Get a baffled muffler like a FLowMaster.
Wouldn't an x pipe be pretty much the same as running a single system considering the way they flow? It pretty much makes them 1 pipe then back to 2. Glasspacks are ultra quiet at idle when you have headers but they really scream in the highend. as for having them work on 4 cyls each, there is no comparison in the sound compared to a ricer.
Yeah, someone explain this whole crossover pipe thing to me. According to one advertisement, an X-pipe 'eliminates firing order pressure differences between the right and left banks of the exhaust manifolds or headers, and this pulse-free, synchronized equal flow and pressure increases horsepower regardless of RPM'. I'm guessing that 'firing order pressure differences' occur when pistons on the same side fire sequentially (e.g. 4,2 and 7,8 w/ a 15426378 firing order) - thus, for a moment, i've increased pressure on one side and decreased it on the other. I can envision where an X-pipe would keep a more constant pressure on each side, and therefore on the whole system. And, it seems reasonable that this equalization would result in a more uniform 'rumble' from each pipe, and maybe more HP. Is any of this on the right track?
Anyone ever take a look at tractor replacement mufflers? Straight thru design with louvers.
I would stay away from the tractor mufflers. I've looked at 'em, and they have these louvers that stick up, and look like they'd really get in the way of flow.
The straight through glasspack with the perforated tube seems like the way to go. I put one on my explorer when the stock exhaust rotted out, and I like it. Cheap and effective. I got the longest one possible, and it's not real loud. More of a low rumble. And it DID make a noticeable difference in performance! I think most of it was getting rid of that stupid resonator.
im a big fan of glasspacks, i just installed them on my F350 with a 460 and it sounds great, and i also have them on my `83 town car that has a 5.0, i like the sound better then a flowmaster style muffler, but thats just my opinion
