Hi,
I am posting for my father-in-law who just got a '99 explorer. What are you guys with 99's getting for mileage with these things? He is getting about 11 hiway with his, is this the norm? It has the 4.0 Liter SOHC V-6 motor and is the 4X4. Thank you in advance for your responses.

The max I've gottten so far with mine is 13 MPG. Typically I get 12. If anyone knows how I can improve this (short of keeping it parked) please let me know.
you can improve your gas milage by getting a performance chip .....also always use at least 89 octane gas or better in an Explorer for some reason Explorers tend to build up and their sensors get dirty quickly leading to the check engine light coming on constantly.... some unsavoy inspectors will suggest that a new catalytic converter is necessary in order to pass emmissions.... this problem has been noted on all Explorers from 1994-1998's I'm not sure about the 99's but you know what they say "Tried, True, and Ford Blue lol
Michael - I have a 99 Sport 4X4 with the 4.0 liter SOHC. I get 14 - 16 mpg, and higher with highway mileage. If it is snowy out and the 4wd has kicked in, I'll get about 14 mpg.

that talks about an air-box modification that improves mileage and performance. Others have switched to K&N filters which lets in more air, more air means more mileage/performance.
Do a search or post your question on the website I given you.
I haven't done the above mod but can tell you it's very simple and it's free! My '99 XLT is still under warantty, gonna wait before making any mods.
I have a 98 XLT 4X4 and have gotten 21 on a road trip. The use of 89 octane is not true. The book quotes 87 anything else is a waste of money. If you do use 89, disconnect the battery for 1 minute then drive normally to reprogram the computer. I have always used 87 and have not had any problems. Town driving does kill the mileage, but I have not gotten lower than 14 in mixed driving. I would have the dealer check it out. It could be the Control-Trac is not working right. The 4X4 system is supposed to kick into 2WD after 35MPH. If it is not doing this, then it could cause mileage problems and tire wear. Hope this helps.
I have a 1999 Sport SOHC V6, gets about 14 in town and about 15 to 16 on the highway (at 65 mph)
I was told the 4.6 V8 would probably get better nilage than the 210 horse V6, guess so! I'm hoping it gets a little better as it breaks in (just turned 7,000 miles).
Here is a list of modifications that helped this owner get over 30MPG. I would suspect you should get close to 20MPG if everything is in good order. MPG is a factor of driving habits, weather conditions, vehcile conditions and many more things.
I have a '99 Sport with the OHV V6 and 4.10 rear end. My drive style is fairly conservative and the roads I travel on are fairly rural so I'm doin' about 80km/h most of the time. I can go 410-440km before the "Check Gage" light comes on at which time I usually fill up. When I fill up at that point my tank takes about 59L. It's a 65.5L tank. I read somewhere in the owners manual about a Fuel Reserve but I don't know how much is in the reserve. One time I drove an extra 20km with the Check Gage light on. Another time I tried that and I only made it 10km before I ran out of gas. Actually what happened it is I parked on a hill and when I came out from class it wouldn't start. I called CAA and they came with enough gas to get me to the gas station.
