I've been thinking of buying a used Explorer to replace my '70 Mustang as a daily driver. I was thinking of one from the early '90's. What kind of mileage do everybody here get out of their early '90's Explorer's? I know the 4WD will get worse mileage, so if you have a 4WD please indicate. Thanks all.

Before all my mods, I was getting a constant 17-20mpg out of my '97 with the 5.0. I think most you talk to will say anywhere between 15-20mpg will be the average - with either engine (4.0 or 5.0). I do know someone who is getting high 20's and even 30mpg on long trips with his 2002, but he is the only one I know of that is doing it...
I'd reconsider. My '97 Sport gets 17 IF I'm lucky. If you have the dough to blow on high gas prices by all means buy one. My 97 is constant 4x4. I don't have the option to switch it off which I've been told is a little harder on gas. Other years you can shut it off. Our Ford truck got at least 20 mpg. The last question I asked when given the keys to my Explorer was how the mileage was. I guess I was thinking 20 at the LEAST. I was seriously wrong.
I'm selling mine and BUYING a Mustang!!!! Cheaper on gas and a lot more attractive, although my sport is pretty awesome looking. Just can't afford to fill the hog!
For me, 15-20 mpg is a blessing. My '70 with it's modified 351W gets about 12 miles to the gallon if I'm lucky, and that's when it's properly tuned. So, 15 would be good for me.

Hello, for everybody, all Explorers are geared too high(#'s) for optimum gas mileage. They are compromised toward towing and off roading. They usually run 3.27 to 3.73's.
If your mileage is your biggest concern, change the ratio to a lower ratio. (Example: change the high 3.73 to a lower 3.27)
Remember 4x4's need both front and rear the same.

That's about right. It's about the mileage that I get. The AWD doesn't get as good mileage as the 2WD. You can add an air intake, cat-back exhaust, and a chip. That's about it, really, unless you want to spend some major major bucks. I've also seen people get better mileage using synthetics.
