Do people replace bad valve lifters because they make to much noise. Can the engine stop working if you don't repace them? The truck sounds like a sounds like a diesel truck. 1987 f150 4.9 reg. gas.
Thanks again

that clicking you may be hearing from the lifters,
will turn into worn pushrods, rocker arm parts, worn camshaft, metal filings, floating around else where,
plus the valves aren't opening completely
guess the choice is yours........ on how long you want this vehicle to last ......
Thanks Morky, I think I will replace the lifters this week. How do I get the lifters out ? My manual says to use a special tool that uses a magnet can I use anything else, I don't have any special tools.
Ps today I jumped started my truck and melted the plastic off the jumped clamps. Did I hook up the poss. to the neg. by mistake ? How stupid am I !!! I have never had this happen to me before. Anyway I switched jumper cables and both truck and car work fine.
I was able to get the lifters out of my 302 (at about 50k miles) with just a magnet. It took a little finagling, but the magnet was able to lift the lifters high enough that I could grab the lifters with my fingers and kind of wiggle them out. Some of them came right out with the magnet, others I had to work at for a couple minutes (they're slick with oil and a little tricky to hang on to).
