HELP - Oil Warning Light

Hi Everyone:

I have a 1964 F-100 with a 292 Y-Block. Can anyone tell me if the oil warning lamp is suppose to light up when the ignition key is turned and then go off after the engine starts? Mine no longer lights at all. I have checked the bulb and the sending unit at the engine block and they both seem to have juice according to my test lamp. Should I put in a new sending unit? They are relatively cheap. Probaley should put in a mechanical oil pressure gauge to be on the safe side but I wanted to keep as much as possible bone stock. My generator light comes on when the key is turned and goes off as soon as the engine starts. I kind of think that is how the oil lamp should work too but sure would like to have a confirmation. Thanks for any assistance.

Test the light this way:
1. Turn on the ignition ( to RUN, not START.)
2. Remove the wire on the oil sending unit.
3. Touch the wire on a good ground.
If it lights, you know you have a bad sending unit.
If it doesn't, and you are sure you have a good ground, then you have a bulb, fuse or wiring problem.

BP gives good advice! Mine is fix the problem, don't generate more by adding aftermarket gages. More trouble and money than they are worth. IMHO! of course.

It was the Sending Unit

Thanks BP for the advice---I did what you mapped out and sure enough, it was a defective sending unit. What a great forum with great people helping others in need.

Well, into the fray of idiot light, versus mechanical guage. They both have their merits. Just how often do you look at a pressure guage? I mean, if you are paraniod, you look often. But once you are convinced your truck is doing fine, you are likely to look at the oil pressure guage only when you start up.

The light, on the other hand, is harder to overlook. Even if you are not paying too much attention.

I decided to keep the stock idiot light and put one of those little 2 1/8 guages to the side. I had a old rusty salvaged cluster to cut up anyhow, which I drilled for the oil guage and a tach at the same time. Looks nice after new paint IMHO, in my otherwise bone stock dash. Whatever you do, don't hang the oil guage below the dash, or, heaven forbid, put it up top.

Unhappy HELP---Oil Pressure Light Problem Again

Hello:

This forum once help me solve a problem with my oil pressure sending unit for my 292 Y-Block. It turned out the problem was the sending unit which I replaced and all was well. Now six months later I have another problem with the oil light that it stays on even after the engine is on. I saw this today when I was driving and immediately shut the engine down. Check the oil and all was fine, no overheating, no bad engine noises. So I took a chance and started it again and was prepare to shut it down again if I noticed that it was starving for oil. Sounded fine so I drove it home, only about a half a mile with nothing out of the ordinary. Do you think it could be another bad sending unit that stays on all the time? Or do you think it could be a bad or clogged oil pump? Any suggestions as what to test first and how?

Thank you for any assistance.

This is where you DO need a mechanical oil pressure guage to test the system. The light coming on indicates that the sender is making contact, which it normally does when it sees 5 lb or less psi. Could be bad sender, could be crap in the inlet to the sender, could be poor oil pressure.

IMHO, put a "T" in the system and attach a mechanical oil pressure sender and see what the real #s are.

Wink

It was a bad sending unit again. I think I will take everyone's advice and run a mechanical gauge and the light off of a T fitting. Thank you everyone for your guidance
