97 explorer transfer case problem

I have a 97' with SOHC, electronic shift with control trac with 125000mi. It jumps out of hi range (skips a gear tooth and clunks) when transmission is put into reverse (fine in lo range) and has even jumped out of hi, and stayed in neutral, while travelling at highway speed (ouch). It seems as if the electronic motor does not turn far enough to fully engage the hi range gear (I have had the transfer case apart and could not find any problems with worn parts but I did notice that the aluminum spiral which moves the hi/lo gear inside was marked where the hi gears natural location was-I felt that the gear should have moved farther than this wear point indicated). I rotated the contacts on the electronic shift motor as far as possible (not very much)to allow more rotation which seemed to help for about a month but it now is back to the same problem. As far as I know there is no TSB. Any help out there?
