I have a 1969 F100 with a 9 inch in the rear. There is no fill nut/hole in the rear end, and I would like to check the fluid, and possibly change it. How can this be done without the fill hole? Do I have to drop the whole chunk out or what?
There should be a pipe plug on the third member. On the left side if I remember correctly. A 3/8 ratchet should fit the plug. If there isn't one, then that would be the first case of that I had ever heard of. Make sure there isn't a lot of crud in the way. There always has to be a way to fill the differential.
Hmmm.... wonder how the oil got in there...? I imagine you've already checked for a fill plug on the backside of it (the 'cover' side)? Maybe a previous owner mixed up 2 different years of third member and housing, but how did they fill it?
Most 9" have the fill plug on the driver's side of the third member housing. As previous said, if no plug, then it came out of a vehicle with plug in rear axle housing.
Here is likely what happened. Some 9s have the filler in the housing (older) some in the chunk (newer). Someone has swapped an older chunk into the newer housing, and possiably filled it from either the vent hole or through the tube end.
I recently ran in the problem myself. I wanted to upgrade my 66 to the larger rear brakes introduced in 68, and was gonna swap the complete rear housing while using an existing chunk that I had. Got to looking and no fill hole. I ended up using the new axles in the old housing with new ends to get the brakes and ratio that I wanted.
