I have 2000 PSD with 7.3 6 speed wtih a exhaust brake and 4" banks exhaust
have pyro and trbo guages with superchips tuner. Problem when pulling heavy loads of 6,000 lbs plus in overdrive at speeds from 60 to 65 mph the trbo guage jumps lose and gains psi. As soon as I get of 65 mph it goes away oor if I down shift into 4th no problems at all. If I run the turck in stock mode I don't have this problem. The only seems to happen when I have the the tuner installed at safe or perfromace tow.
Sounds like the dreaded "turbo stall" or "surge". Couple of ways to avoid it. Never experienced it myself but have taken measures to prevent it, "just in case".
Search threads for turbo stall, turbo surge, grab a 12 pack and read a lot.......
Oh, short synopsis......
1. Pull in a lower tune.
2. Get a vented turbo housing (ATS).
3. Install a Wicked Wheel.
My first thought - turbo surge (or flutter) - whatever you want to call it. A PSD is notorious for doing this when the HP is raised with a chip or tuner. Can you hear anything different when the gauge is bouncing?? You should be able to her the surge along with the boost gauge bouncing.
yes the you can hear the trbo when the guage is acting up
Yup - that's what it is then. My truck did it pretty bad - so I put the Wicked Wheel (mainly 'cause it was the cheapest fix) in it and it stopped the flutter completely. Check out Heatstoked's list for what to do to stop it.
It's an aftermarket intake wheel for the compressor side of your turbo. It's a fairly easy fix (if you are comfortable removing your turbo) and cost less than $100 including shipping.
I have a predator tuner and when I would tow my 5er I would get a little surge too!! Got some advice and help from the same guys who have responded to your thread. Get the wicked wheel (WW) and your problems with surge are over. Get the revised instructions from heat. As he and both found out the long way about leaking o-rings. Easy fix though, get another set of hands to help you when you pull the turbo. It is a lot easier!!!!!
