Just finished rebuild on 1 bbl carter and problem still exists. Must prime carb with gas to start after sitting for a while. Could an improperly adjusted metering rod at rebuild cause this problem? It's about the only thing that i am not perferctly sure was done correctly!
Everything functions properly after prime starting including starting if you don't let it sit very long.
It shouldn't. All the metering rod is for is to restrict fuel flow thru the jet at high vacuum situations such as idling and cruising. When you accelerate and the vacuum drops, it raises to allow more fuel thru the jet. I wonder if the fuel is siphoning back trhu the pump after it is turned off.
I noticed in the rebuild kit there was a gasket that appeared to be meant for between the pump diaphram and the bottom of the bowl. There wasn't one before rebuild and the rebuild kit diagram didn't show one so it wasn't used. I placed it into position out of curosity but it didn't fit quote right so I didn't use it. Do you think this could be of importance?? The carb worked for ages without it.
I think that it is like a oneway valve. It lets the diaphram suck fuel into the pump chamber, but blocks the hole so that when you pump the gas, it all goes out to the squirter nozzle instead of back into the bowl. This might explain why there is no fuel in the pump chamber after it is turned off.
