I am looking at a new cam for the 390, probably the Crane 901, maybe the 941. I am also thinking about heads. I have C6AE-R's and found some D2TE-AA's today at a junkyard ($100, I'll talk him down if need be). Will the D's give me any advantage at all? I know they are meaty for porting but is that it? I've searched the forum and there are alot of pro's and con's for both. It's a mild performance build and no off roading, but I like to know IT'S there if I want it. Any words?
I'm not sure. I understand that the C's have about 8.5 to 9.5 and the D's have up to 10? I guess I'm looking for something between 9 and 10. I want to be able to pull a Chevy out of a ditch while at the same time leave in a hurry.
Debest, I think I would use the D2TEs on a mild build. The C6AE-R heads are well thought of among the drag racing, over 400 hp crowd. I'd sell the C6s on Ebay, and spend the cash you get on a nice manifold ( like a blue thunder ) . The 901 cam is too small to use the flow capability of the C6s. The D2s have the later 'velocity style' intake ports. and slightly smaller chambers, and usually hardened exhaust seats. The D2s are excellent for pickup truck use. DF, @ his Dad's
..And unless those heads are in remarkable shape and all the manifold bolt holes are clean, i.e. no broken bolts in them, they shouldn't cost more than $40-50 for the pair.
