bet this has been done before, but search didn't find it....am looking at 5.4 reg-cab; limited colors due to end of year, found the nice wedgewood blue but with 4.6! i test drove it, and did notice the engine does work harder than the 5.4 i also tested.......i bet most of you will say go with the 5.4, it does cost 900 more but is stronger etc......i hear from many sources that the mileage is like 1-2 per mile different.........well let me have it, lol!!!!!!!
IMO - Go with the 5.4L. The mileage isn't enough to make a difference, and I would bet you won't regret spending the $900. $900 over the life of your loan (unless you are paying cash) is only a few bucks a month.
I was fortunate enough to drive a Rental with 4.6L for a week while on travel and I couldn't tell a difference in mileage, however I did notice the power difference.
I think if you're thinking about either and could afford it, get the 5.4L. I have 4.6L, I don't mind. I think it's enough power for me considering I'll probably never pull anything. I got my XLT at a good price with rebates and stuff... I wasn't even in need of another vehicle. I didn't want to pay more for something I know I didn't need. Yeah, it would of been nice have all that more power, but I couldn't justify the cost. I'm a happy camper with my 4.6.
I would think you would be better with a 5.4 when it comes time to trade thinking of the future. I have the 2003 FX4 with a 5.4 and love the way it pulls and drives and looks. I just love the truck. Bought it with 81,000 mile and runs like it just came out of the show room.

Yes it is true I bought an 03 Screw FX4 with 81,000 miles. Now has 85,000 mile have driven from Ft Smith, AR to S.A. TX twice and runs like a dream with about 18 mpg running 70+
Glad it still runs strong. I thought for sure that was a typo and you meant 18K miles. Someone spent a lot of time behind the wheel to get 81k miles in less than 2 years.
Having downsized from an F-350 cc drw with a 7.3 PS to an 04 f150 with a 4.6, I think that once the initial shock has worn off, the 4.6 is a good choice. I frequently run it hard (responding to Fire Calls), and I have found it to have plenty of power. I also get about 15mpg everyday and I got 20mpg on a 500 mile trip. My parents have an expedition with the 5.4 and I can't tell that much difference.
I actually owned an XLT with the 4.6L for 3,000 miles. In my opinion the response and power were more than adequate. I upgraded to the 5.4L Lariat and now am about 3,000 miles on it and love it too. Either way you'll do OK.
If I'm not mistaken (which is possible) - Ford is offering a rebate on the Tow-n-go package which covers the cost of the upgrade from 4.6 to 5.4 liter that is also equipped with the towing package. You should be able to get into the 5.4 for the same $$$$ after rebate!
