390fourby. What transmision do you plan on using? 4 speed or c6? The reason that I ask, is there are lots of trucks that came with inline 6's and standards. The only thing you would need to change would be the bell housing. My truck is a 73 F100 that is 2 wheel drive and short wheel base. It had a a 240 and 4 speed in it when I bought it. The 390 that I had was a direct bolt in other than the bell housing. One word of advice....if you plan to run headers, put them in the same time the engine goes in. Let me know if you have any specific questions. I have had a 240, a 302, a 390, and now a 460 in my truck. I'm not an expert on engine swaps in these trucks, but not far from it. I've also experimented with several different types of bolt on goodies. I would be very happy to share any knowledge I have and take pictures if you need them.
I'm sure looking for one, I need a C-6 auto shifter for my 84 SB as I don;t want to take the standard column out ot it. The only reasonably priced I've found is on JC Whitney's for $62.95 but it's kinda short 12 inches I think.
Does anyone have an old aftermarket shifter for a C-6 that they want to get rid of reasonably priced????
Docholiday72tx,
Thanks for the info I didn"t know that an FE would bolt into a 6cly truck.
(what about a 300ci) Is the 4spd in a 6cyl truck the same as what would be stock in a v8 truck( Do they hold up to the power?) I'm planning on using a 4spd behind a 428ci. Hopefully I can find a decent short box truck to transplant my motor into. Do you like your 460 better than the 390? Was the 460 as easy of a swap as the 390?
A 240 and 300 have the same block, so there's no worries there. My 6 cylinder 4 speed held up just fine to the 390. I'm not sure how it would work with a 428. The 460 was a little more difficult to get in, but it has a little more guts. I think over all the 390 was the best bang for the buck. It was a stock engine with aluminum intake, headers, and msd ignition. It ran realy good, had plenty of guts, and still got 14 mpg. Let me know what you decide to do about a swap. I've been there and done that and can probably give you some short cuts, and ways to save money.
