On my 1978 F150 4x4 with a 300 v6 with a one barrel carb i am haveing trouble. I recently got it running great, timed it and tuned it and went to get it inspected. i stopped for some gas and when i tried to start it it would not turn over. It would sometimes putt out of the exhaust and sound like it was going to go but wouldnt, the carb started to leak again and it took an hour before i got it started and that was after taking off the air filter and opening up the airflow to the carb. Now i again reset the timeing, retuned the carb by setting everything to what the rebuild kit said to. Everything is supposidly set right with the timing at 6 or a little below since that is where the mark was. I cranked it and it started up but sounded bad so i reved it and slowly it sounded better. i have put a bottle of carb cleaner in the gas tank to clean it. It sounds great and very strong and it drove great. it doesnt have the pickup but it goes fine. you can barely hear the exhaust and engine when it runs good. Now i got it home and let it sit for about ten minutes. i noticed that the carb again is leaking like crazy everywhere and from the bottom especially. I tried to turn it on and it would not turn over, it actually sounded like the battery was dead but i gave it gas and it would crank but not turnover. I let it sit for about 30 minutes and it cranked and the exhaust was very loud but died down as usual and i let it run in the driveway and it ran for about ten minutes then cut off. sounded great but then just slowly started to sound like crap. Does it need a new carb or what. Also when the hubs on the front wheels are in the free position it seems that when i put the car in 4 wheel drive they arent turning but when i put them in the lock position the clamp on the front driveshaft connected to the transfer case aways break and snap off. I have already gone through 8 in the last month and i havent been four wheeling. any help would greatly be appreciated thanks. i am sorry for the lenghth but i am really trying hard to get it to pass inspection. thanks
joseph
If the carb is leaking after the rebuild and everything is tight and on correctly then it is possible that something is warped.
If I understand you the starter engages and turns the engine over but it will not start. Sounds like it is flooding. I would suggest at this point to go buy a rebuilt (or new) carb from a good parts store. Do not skimp - you get what you pay for and more trouble than it is worth. You could take it to a carb rebuild shop but that can get more expensive than a carb from the parts store!!!
Good luck on emissions - I just got mine through for the last time!! Boy what a relief!!
You need to find out what transfer case you have if it is a part time or is it a full time that some one has put a set of locking hubs on. you might have some binding.205 or a 203 transfer. good luck.
p. sounds like your carb is shot. also chek your timimg for your elevation.
It sounds like the float is slightly out of adjustment. Is this a newly rebuilt carb? If it is - exchange it. If it isn't, before you rebuild it or buy a new rebuilt one, check your fuel pump and filter for proper operation.
