Buffer

I have a 96 high top conversion van. The top still looks good, but the rest of it is quickly becoming matt charcoal grey. I have one of those Sears random orbital buffers. Since the body's perfect with no rust or dents, I'd like to try to bring the color back to the oxidized sections. I'm a little nervous since it's black [hard color to work with a buffer]. I was looking for advice as what would be an easy safe way to do it. Or, should I just have it done by a pro.
I checked recently, and they want close to 200 bucks just to buff out the lower sections, everything but the roof. Pretty sure the add on high top roof is clear coat. What a differance that clear coat makes. The Sears buffer is the one you're supposed to mix the wax, and glazing compound. I used it once before on an 85 van, but that one was Ford white, It made some improvement. I don't need a brilliant shine, just would like it to be black again.

Thanks
Leo

Buffing

Would Suggest Letting A Pro Do It For You Black Is A Very Hard Collor To Work With Will Show Every Flaw I Know This From 10 Years Of Body Experience Should Run Around 200 To 300 Dollars .the Difference Between Clearcoat And Single Stage Paint Is That Clearcoat You Can Burn Through When Buffing If This Happens You Will Need To Get Repainted Hope This Is Helpful

Hi Vaughn,

Thanks for taking the trouble to answer. Guess I'll have to break into the piggy bank. I have to say I'm surprised this van has no rust...maybe the running boards deflect the sand, and salt spray. My last one, an 85, was rusting under each door, and front of hood....with only 2 years on it.

Hey thanks again I appreciate the experienced opinion.

Try using Colour X and follow up with Deep Crystal polish (Both made bt Meguiar's). I noticed that this was posted two months ago, so what have you done to the van?

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm ashamed to say that the van hasn't been touched.
A few nagging problems are blocking progress. I need to do a few mechanical repairs on it, before I tackle the outside finish. Been buzy, you know how it goes. The brakes, and such take priority over the oxidation. Hopefully, I'll get it done before the snow flies. If not, there's always next spring. Tough without a garage. I only have a driveway. Really hate working outside in the winter.
Thanks again for the responses...much appreciated!!
