To get it advanced as far as you can without ping or premature detonation you will probably have to try a few times. Put it in park, turn the Dist. until she speeds up, with a light 12 BTC should do it, just don't go to far at a time. Drive your truck, push it hard up a big hill or whatever you can think of to load the engine good and proper. Then, if it doesn't knock, ping, you know, you can try to speed it up another notch. When you get to the point you can hear that knock/ping, back it up a little until it doesn't. Then it will be right. Hot water does sound like a good idea. When I have tapped on them it was during a tear down but, desperate times call for desperate measures.

I got my timing set!! I never did get the dist to turn by hand, I had to use a piece of wood on the vac advance to hammer turn the dist. I found I could not go beyond 10 degrees. I had it at 12 deg and it seemed to idle great, but it knocked the second I moved from Park to Drive. Had to back it down to 10.

I found that the timing did not cure my backfire issue. It still pops and shoots fire when I bounce it. I'm almost certain now that it's the carb. Will be ordering a new one as soon as I can sell the wife on it.

Question though... I noticed some play in the dist shaft. With the rotor on, I was finding that I could get the shaft to turn about 1/4 in. in either direction. I was told by the previous owner that the timing chain is about 6 months old.... is this amount of play normal? I was expecting zero play.

Thanks in advance.

Nope, I don't think there should be that kind of slack and that sorta explains why your dist. wouldn't turn to begin with. I bet it will run forever the way it is but, there's the chance that it's a factory chain with a plastic cover that I have found to explode and send chunks to every corner of a block. I have a couple 460's on hand so I haven't checked the play in the one I'm running. If she gives, I'll change her out but, if it was the only one I had, I would probably take the day to change it and be sure. Good Luck and I knew you would get it to turn eventually....
