I'm having intermittent problems starting my 95 Explorer. When I crank, the engine turns over but will hesitate before revving up. Then today when it started it kept hesitating and I had to restart it several times before it started normally.
Before the problem seemed to only happen when it was cold, but now it's doing it most of the time. Tonight it was still warm. Last weekend I changed the air filter (pretty dirty) and the problem went away for awhile. Then I decided to go ahead and change the fuel filter. Car was fine until the next day and then back to same symptoms. I can hear the fuel pump when I turn the key. Incidentally, the symptom is very much like when I disconnected the inertia switch to relieve the fuel pressure per the Haynes manual, with the engine loping and hesitating.
Right now I have no idea if it's a fuel problem, ignition problem, emissions, computer, or electrical.
I should add that once it's running it is fine; gas mileage is great and power and acceleration are fine.
This morning it didn't start on the first try but on the second try it turned right over and quickly went to normal idle with no problems.
Well, I changed the PCV valve yesterday as well as cleaning and re-making connectors on several sensors. The PCV valve still rattled but it and the intake manifold were very gunked up. Then cleaned the engine very thoroughly and took her out for a road trip. Ran fine.
This morning first thing, it cranked right up and idled beautifully with no problems at all, as well as 3 more times before and after driving around town.
We'll see....
