If I am going to be paying 33,800 for a hunk of steel and plastic, I want it to be the way I want it to be. Living in the Snowbelt of Northern Wisconsin has taught me to always have a 4 wheel drive vehicle handy. This is for daily life AND emergencies. As a volunteer firefighter/emt/rescuetech other people's good health depends on my 4WD vehicle. One thing living in Norhtern Wisconsin has taught me, one must ALWAYS have a 4wd vehicle at thier disposal. There is just no way around it. On a cold December day, when you've had a 12 inch snowstorm (or much greater) and you know your road isn't going to be plowed for 2-3 days (or greater), its a great relief knowing that you can and will make it to town that day.
So when you ask me, "Do you really need a 4x4?" The answer is most definatly yes. Because I want it, Ford makes it, and I would not be able to live without it.
I go to the beach about once a month and occationally the entrances are impossible to get through with just a 2WD. Sure, it's not very often but it would suck getting stuck. Not a necessity but I like the peace of mind of 4WD.
I don't use my 4x4 extremely often. But as far as my personal preference, if I wanted 2 wheel drive I would buy a car. Exceptions to this policy of course would be if I live in TX, AZ or somewhere where they never see the lights of subzero temps or snow. I too like the peace of mind of having 4 wheel drive. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Live in SE Az, got a 4X4. (Actually 3 now, the 01 Lariat, the 96 Ranger, and the 02 Honda Rancher) Just because....................... Plus playing in the desert is a sport here and to have the safest fun, the 4X4 is the way to go. I have done a lot off road in 4X2 but it is just not as much fun. Plus, how many other toys do you have that are not really necessary to life.
It's not what you need............It's what you want..........................
That whole "higher insurance thing is a myth. I just went out to the Progressive website and got a quote on an extended cab 5.4l 4x2 and 4x4...prices were exactly the same, down to the dollar.
I have Statefarm Insurance an my premium for my 4x4 is not much more if any than it would be for a 4x2, just a myth like you said.
Once it quits snowing I'll head outside and take a picture to post on my gallery. I know I don't "need" a 4x4, but in this part of the world it sure makes a lot of sense.

It finally stopped snowing and I've posted a new picture to my gallery.
I need 4x4 to get to the firehouse for calls when the roads are bad. The question I have is: What kind of idiots buy open diff. trucks?
Lots of people! ls is not what it is cracked up to be. Sure they can get you out of trouble in a straight line but in a very icy corner they tend to make a truck or car push. They require more maintenance and fail at a greater rate than an open differential. Some of the best driving cars use open diffs! Also some trucks are built for speed and handling, these will have open diffs too. I guess their are a lot of idiots out there! :O)
