I don't want to get anyones hopes up but I saw an ad in Classic Trucks I recieved yesterday offering a power steering kit for pre-65 F100 trucks. They claim to be using a saginaw steering box (I think). I do not believe this is the Toyota box conversion already popular for the 50's model trucks.
This just might be the ticket for those wanting power steering.
I can double check the ad when I get back home tonight.
I double checked the ad and I was wrong. The ad is for CARS not trucks. How this ended up in the mag I will never know but I guess they slid it in because of the rod builders section they included this month.
The ad starts, in bold letters, Ford Enthusiasts.. ...power steering and disc brakes for your 49-64 Ford... .
So I scanned the ad last night and read that they offer a Saginaw 605 box either in 5.5 turns or 3.5 turns. I've been thinking about it all day because a friend of mine is looking to buy a 62 uni and was asking about power steering.
I guess I should have re-read the article before getting anyones hopes up.
So, after I've been flogged , tarred and feathered, and hung out on the fencepost for telling fibs in class, please forgive me as I am no longer worthy to introduce news to the group any more. Feel free to verbally abuse me as I now ca feel no more shame than I have already subjected myself to.
Go to the junk yard and find a power asist setup from early 70 ford 4x4 and a power steering pump and you have power without a lot of cost and headache.
Mine cost me a case of beer and about 1 -2 hours
I read a post someone ordered one from NoLIMIT for a 61?I talked to the owner a year ago and he was working on one for their shop truck.I'm not sure what year it was but,I'm thinking it was a late 50's or early 60's.
Hey
Do you think the system you bought even will fit a 59 F-100? I don´t know the type you speak about, but I guess it´s almost the same system on 4x4 as on other cars and trucks from those years? Is it so or is there a special type on 4x4? You say "asist system" but did you take the complete system and how does it look and function? Is this a sort of add on system? Wernerman.
It attach's to your existing system by bolting a hydralic cylinder to the axle and front steerig bar ,then you change your drag link between your steerig arm and box, this has 4 hoses ,2 to your cylinder which looks like a steerig stabilizer with 2 hoses and 2 to your power steerig pump which if you can't find a bracket to mount ,can be fabricated using old brackets.
I pulled a saginaw box out of a 79 Ford Van a the bone yard to install in my 64 f-100.
This truck is also powered by a 460 C-6. I was able to clear the stock cast iron exhaust manifold. It did take some work and fabrication. I'll get some photos out when I get my scanner fixed.
Check out my gallery for power steering for straight axle 61-64 F100's using the Toyota 4wd box. I have templates for the brackets and drive this truck every day.
It's not something you are going to accomplish in an afternoon but if you have some metalworking skills it's worth it. Just my 2 cents!!
