5R55E Transmission
While trying to locate a used trans for my 97 4X4 with a 4.0 SOHC which is a 5R55E I found one that came out of a 97 4X4 with a 4.0 OHV. The salvage yard owner says it's also a 5R55E and it will interchange. The local ford dealer says it's a different trans. Can anyone tell me if they really are different and if so, what is different about them?

There are only two differences in the 5R55E I know of 1. 4X4 and 2WD have different sump depths. 2. Early 97's have an extra clutch speed sensor in the OD section. This was eliminated in later versions. The extra sensor can be ignored if putting in a vehicle without the connection. If the vehicle has the connector for the sensor and the tranny doesn't, the connector is cut off and the wires are twisted together. Sounds strange, but that is what is done and it will not throw a code.
