I have a 97 ranger 2wd 4.0 with 5R55E. Drives fine in 1st and second. Slips in drive and rev. Anyone run into this problem?
Mine does it also. No one was able to fix it, they just wanted to do a rebuild on the tranny. I've ran it 40,000 miles like this and it hasn't gotton any worse.
Go onto the next page or so of postings. There is a HUGE 5R55E post with lots of information that may help.
There is also an extensive section on transmission stuff further down the listing of sub-forums.

A relative of mine had this problem on a used Ranger that he bought from someone that used the truck as the spare vehicle towed behind his motorhome. Didn't remove the driveline, which the Owner's manual recommends, and so the transmission was rotated internally without any fluid pressure. This is what I attribute to the slipping.
If you drive the truck without overdrive turned on, it should eliminate the problem. Only use the overdrive once you have achieved highway speed. This eliminates the slipping. Other than that the repair is to rebuild.
That translates to purchase of some new or used parts. I am not sure, but it may be that you can only purchase the solenoids as a 'pack', with multiple solenoids connected together. That is true of at least one Ford transmission currently in use/production.
Better than having to take it all apart to effect repair. More knowledgable than me can state if more than dropping the pan and possibly valve body is required.
If the valve operated by the solenoid were filled with grunge, that would affect apply fluid pressure also, as would a damaged valve {the 'Performance' option}. To check for a damaged winding, a VOM could be used to determine if the winding is open or shorted to ground. Pretty simple test that can be done externally using the connector terminals.
