Greetings all,
I'm new to this forum and so far found it very informative concerning my 2001 F350 with the V10.
My main reason for being here is that I had to replace the head on my truck after accelerating normally to cross an intersection only to find a spark plug laying on my engine after thinking I had lost my exhaust system. $2400.00 later I was advised to look into this matter further as it was very strange to the mechanic who replaced the head. I was approx 2000 miles over my 75K warranty as I do a lot of long highway commutes. I had always maintained my truck using an authorized Ford dealer for all maintenance issues so the truck is well taken care of. I do not put any large loads on the truck and pretty much baby it. I was wondering if anyone had similar experiences, knowledge of what might have caused it, and if I can expect this to happen again with the V10? Whatever you have to offer would be greatly appreciated.
First of all, welcome to FTE
And thanks for the greeting.

Strange? Was this a Ford certified mechanic? If so, he should have heard of "Spark Plug Blowout", which seems to be somewhat of a common occurence for the 6.8 and 5.4 Triton engines.
Terry,
Do a search here using Spark Plug Blowout (or Blow Out) and read-up on it if you have a chance. Many different ideas, mostly a bad design with the length of threads in the head.
Ron,
I had taken it to the Ford dealership who informed me that I would be paying anywhere from $2500.00 on up depending on what they found after opening it up. Then I was informed that my warranty was up. I then decided to ask around for other quotes and found that a auto repair who I trust could do it for $2400. With money being tight I had gone with the cheaper. He was the guy who said he heard of it on the V8s but not on the 10s.
Thanks for the link suggestion, I will investigate further.
Don't expect Ford to come to your rescue! They won't admit to the problem. I see a Class Action Lawsuit coming at some point! And there should be one! This just upsets me even more to know they still have not addressed the problem!
Thanks to all for your advice. If I had prior info to this problem by coming across this forum earlier I could have saved about $2200.00 or possibly avoided the problem all together. I have to agree with Roadrunner2... I see a class action lawsuit in the future. I'm going to pursue the issue with Ford to see what their response will be and if it's not satisfactory I will decide whether to explore other avenues. The winters are long and cold here in MN so it gives a guy a lot of spare time to kill. Ha.
Thanks again,
Terry
Yeah, I hear ya! Look how long and how many lawsuits it took for Ford to address the Crown Vic Police Car Fuel tank issues. Let alonte the Explorer or Exploder however you want to put it. Chev as you recall had a big time problem with truck fuel tanks on the older series trucks. Look how long it took GM to deal with the issue.
More importantly, only after they were sued to the hilt! They are all a like as far as I am concerned. Stick the customer and get away with it if we can. Be curious to learn the out come of your case.
yah 2 laywers sitting across a room sure it will be settled quick
i think they know by now both lawyers get richer and everybody else loses
ford has thousands of lwyers sitting around twidleing their thumbs
best case on firestone what a new pair of tires
side mount tank a 5 dollar peice of sheet metal?
and a billion dollars for the lawyer

I did see one report on the web where a guy was trying to get a Class Action Lawsuit going. That was some time ago. Nothing of late.
I hate that stuff, but some times it is necessary. The lawyers end up with all the money, but at least finallyit gets Fords Attention! Unless it is a Crown Vic Gas tank blowing up issue or some life threathen like the Exploer-Bridgestone problems I don't expect Ford to do any thing. They would have done some thing by now if that were the case.
I had a 87 GMC sierra with dual external fuel tanks. I fill out the paper work for the class action lawsuit around 1996 or 1997. The choice was $500 or $2000 off a new GM vehicle. I chose $500. THIS SPRING 2004, I got a letter in the mail from GM with my $2000 check off the purchase of a new GM vehicle. Not the $500 I chose. So SEVEN years later I recieved nothing.
Just some info about class action suits
I wonder what percentage of Ford engines are having this problem? Plus Ford has all the power in situations such as this. People are not going to sue over $2400 and pay thousands in legal bills.
In your case, only being 2000 over the 75K Ford ESP plan, and having had your vehicle in for many Ford services, you should have gone to that dealer and requested Ford assistance. Your case would have been VERY strong to recieve it, as they will usually bend over backwards for someone who gives them REGULAR business like that, and especially just out of warranty.
Now if you had purchased it used with 60K, never spent a dime at the dealership, naturally they arent going to get all happy faced to see you rolling in for your first visit with a $2500.00 failure looking for handouts. What MANY people dont realize, is that some after warranty adjustments are a share portion repair. Customer pays a percentage, dealer pays a percentage, Ford pays the balance. So dealer isnt likely generous enough to pay several hundred dollars to fix a vehicle thats never been in his shop, nor was purchased from him.

Homer, I live in a large metro area here in southwest one friend was just shy of giong out of warranty and Ford paid for. The other two, even coming being long time Ford customers the dealer and Ford didn't offer not bit one of assistance. Lucky you if you have a dealer that would support your cause. It has been my experience once out of warranty they could care less!
