I got a 2002 E450 Van with a V10 that I bought as a tailgate bus (or at least it will be!) Anyways it had a bum motor when I bought it and after 100$ worth of additives/oil and head scratching I am pretty sure the heads are done, since one valve is very much sticking and the rest aren't doing so hot either. Looks like the oil pump croaked in it originally, and I have since replaced the oil pump with hopes I could just get things to work, since it did start and run.
Thats not so much the case, ran plenty of Sea Foam through it and it still not doing well. The bottom end I think is ok, and I am getting 40psi oil pressure at idle and 60+ at slight throttle, so I think the crank bearings and bottom end is ok (crank does a good amount of spashing of oil into the bottom end luckily.
Soo the question is where is the best cheapest place to buy a set of heads? I found a complete timing set for $150 and was hoping to score some heads for under 400$ (either with exchange or mint low mileage ones)
Here's a link to a thread regarding oil pressure problems. It has a lot of information including Sea Foam and more. The end result was a clogged oil pickup screen, however I decided all the work involved I could chance all the work on a motor that may have never had the oil change until I purchased it. However, the engine was sold and is running again. This doesn't exactly answer you final question about the heads. But provides good reading and information that directly relates to your situation. I also put together a thread for the installation of the new (used) engine. You can find all the thread by searching on my user name. Here's a link on the oil pressure problem. Hope it helps.
I pulled one valve cover on mine, and aside from the typical varnish it looked great on top, I wasn;t able to get the passenger side off (which is where I think most of the problem is)
The cam on the drivers side looked perfect, and I would have assumed any damage would have occured on both sides. Either way I am doing to yank the passenger head off (and probably have to dremel the f'n valve cover off since all the bolts are rotted and cant be removed.
I actually ran a ton of sea foam and other caustic ***** down the the pickup to make sure it was clear, and 0 debris came out of the drain.
I am still optimistic that I may only have to replace one head and this sucker is gonna be good to go. But I have also been looking at reman'd motors, because if i am pulling the body off the frame, its gonna get a completely rebuilt.
