Pobably a pretty obvious answer, but are the front wheel bearing for a 2003 ranger 4x4 able to be replaced? Or do you have to replace the entire knuckle assembly? The knuckle assembly is $325.. so i am more than a little curious. Any assitance would be helpful!
The instructions for an '02 Ranger are as follows:
Wheel Bearing Inspection
Raise the vehicle until the tire is off the floor.
NOTE: Make sure the wheel rotates freely and the brake pads are retracted sufficiently to allow movement of the tire and wheel assembly.
Grasp each front tire at the top and bottom and move the wheel inward and outward while lifting the weight of the tire off the front wheel bearing.
If the tire and wheel (hub) is loose on the wheel spindle or does not rotate freely, perform one of the following actions:
On 4x2 vehicles, adjust the front wheel bearings.
On 4x4 vehicles, replace the wheel hub.
The above instructions imply that the wheel hub and bearing assembly are integral components on the '02 4WD Ranger. Inasmuch as the '02 and '03 4x4 models have the same suspension (I'm pretty sure, anyway), I'd have to think that you are going to have to replace the entire wheel hub.
On the 4x4's you have to repace it as a hub assembly. I have replaced 3 of them and they are very easy to replace. Remove the tire, brake caliper, and rotor. Then remove the large nut in the center of the hub that hold the cv axle into the hub. (you will need to use a pry bar as a backup between the wheel lugs to keep the hub from turning while removing the nut). The remove the 3 bolts that hold the hub in. pry the hum out, disconect the abs sensor. Installation is the same steps in rev. The hubs are pretty expensive, the cheapest price i have found was on Rockauto.com. There is no way to service or replace just the bearings, I tried to seperate the bearings from the hub and ended up putting over 10,000 psi on them from a press untill the whole thing exploded to pieces. On thing you can do to make them last longer is to periodically remove the abs sensor and put some grease in through the hole.
