Extended cranking when hot/warm

My truck takes a long time to start after it has ran a while. I took it to the dealer and the codes was for ICP sensor and slow pressure built to injectors. They replaced the ICP and the problem is still there. I did a search here and found advise to lower oil level to bottom third of dip stick...I did that and still have the problem. The truck starts right up when cold.

Any thoughts or insight would be appreciated. Truck is an 04 CC SRW 6.0 6speed longbed 4x4, truck and engine are Mar/04 build.

When you say extended...
are we talking 30 seconds or more...
or just a second or more than when cold ???

I start mine (embarrased to say) just like a gasser when I don't use the remote start...

I jump in and turn it right to start.... cranks in a second or two max...

maybe you have a loose glow plug wire or one too close to a heat source that is affecting it ???

but if the dealer can't repair... maybe video the difference and go to another dealer...
Not ALL dealers are at the same "expertise" level

It may take a while for all the air to settle out of the oil. When the oil level is high enough for the crank to beat it to foam. the injectors don't work as well.
Try it again today.

If that still doesn't work, try changing the fuel filters. When they get clogged, the pressure in the system builds until the point that the pump can no longer overcome it.

I had the same problem. When it is hot, as with towing, it would take 10 seconds or more to start. I was told to lower the oil level which I have done but I haven't towed since I did it. I will be towing this weekend however and that will be my test. If that doesn't work I'll have to take it in. I hate going to the dealer!!!

Thanks for the reponses guys!

jadamsjr,

"extended" is aprox 10 second or so, when the truck is cold it starts in less than a second.

choctaw bob,

With oil level in the lower third of dip stick it doesn't seem to take as long as it use to (maybe 4-5 seconds) but still longer than when cold (almost immediately). If it was the fuel filters wouldn't it be all the time?

Thanks again for all the help.

If lowering the oil level helped - sounds like you found the trouble spot...

Have heard the dipsticks "COULD" be different lengths too
Can you believe that Not a critical component or anything

Might drain all oil and see how much goes back in.... have heard only put back 13.5 (check me on that !)since about 1.5 is left inside and doesn't drain...
u might be overfilled STILL !

I have the exact same problem with my truck. When cold, it will start right up, but when running for awhile, it takes 30+ seconds to start. Although I am running a chip as well, I'll see what happens when I take the chip out, and lower the oil level.

I run the edge/attitude and with it set at 0 (off, stock) it still does it. Let us know the results of taking the "chip" out. BTW I have 5800 miles on the truck and the dealer changed the oil at 4500 with motorcraft 15-40. The problem was first noticed before the oil change but only once. I plan on going to Mobil 1 Truck/SUV on the next oil change...maybe that will help.

Ok, I'll let you know. I'm taking it out tomorrow. I run the TS Performance Instigator 135HP chip. This kinda sucks right now, because I have to wait after driving the truck, to use it again (for the engine to cool off)

Try lowering it some more. Tim did a thing where he measured all the dipsticks at the dealer near him and all were different. If yours is a little short....When you change put 13.5 quarts back in it (there is 1.05 quarts in the high pressure system that doesn't drain and another half in oil passages) 13.5 should give you plenty of oil.
If you go up and down lots of steep hills, put less in.

If the pump sucks oil through the filter, the blockage will cause a vacume in the line and low pressure initially. I worked on a truck a long time ago that would not restart when hot. If you let it sit a while, it would start. It was the fuel filter. I've never forgotten it because it burned so much of my time looking for the problem.

Got done with towing this weekend. Still does it. Oil is at the lower end of dipstick and once I start towing, the truck takes about 10 seconds of cranking to start. When cold the truck starts in about 1 second max. The hotter the engine the longer it takes to start. Anything else cause this besides the oil level?
