Starting Question

Sometimes when starting my 01 7.3 it makes a clicking sound that sounds like it is coming from behind dash. I wait for wait to start light to go out, then start. I've had the batterys, starter and alternator all checked. Checked good! If you have any ideas let me know. Thanks. Also doesn't cause any codes or show any codes.

Maybe you're hearing the glow plug relay activate. It's hard to tell without actually hearing your truck, but that would be my guess. I can hear mine when it comes on.

Most likely the glow plug relay. Even when the light goes out the relay can remain active.

I don't hear the clicking till I actually turn the key to start the truck. Could it still be the glowplug relay? Could it be going out(glowplug relay)?

Yes it does act as if the truck has dying batteries.

If it makes the noise after you turn the key to start and before the starter engages, I would have a load test performed on the batteries.

Mine don't make the sound till engaging the starter. Mine hasn't made the sound for about a week now. Hope it has resolved itself.

It's just giving you a false sense of security.

That sounds like the same thing mine is doing. Will it start while making the sound? Whenever mine makes the sound it won't start and I have to cycle it again. I'm pretty sure mine needs new glow plugs, however I'm still not sure what it is making the sound.

When it starts making the sound I let off. Cycle it and try it again. It usually will not make the sound after cycling once, but sometimes it takes a few times cycling. Then starts no problem. Have never kept cracking the starter when making the sound, so don't know if it will start while making the sounds.

Sounds like the same thing to me. Mine stopped doing it for a while, now it's come back and getting worse.

I'm going to check my glow plugs here in the next week and I'll let you know. The more and more I learn, I'm starting to lean towards new batteries.
