Small world.
Woody I live in Clinton, up near Ogden.
Fire Rooster I graduated in, yes 94, from Mountain View HS in Mesa. I also took some Firefighting courses at MCC. Most of my instructors were Phoenix Fire. The only one that comes to mind right now is Wes Traynor (there was another instructor for FF1&2, he was a captain for Phx but lived up in Payson, think his name was Dave ?). But I had pretty much every class MCC had to offer for a Fire Science Degree.

Well happy reunion guys ........ ...... Anyway back to the subject for a moment ........ Im suspecting its the glow plug relay......... When you turn on ignition for glow plug warm up the solonoid has sufficient power from the battery to power up the glow plugs ..... But when you crank the engine the power to the glow plug solonoid drops and there is insufficient power to maintain solonoid contact at the relay and hence the buzzing, clicking sound from the relay.

That's what I thought too, so I replaced my glow plug relay and it still does it, so I know that's not it.
No, I haven't replaced that. Today when I started my truck up, I paid a little closer attention. I noticed that the clicking sound seems to go along with my "wait to start" light blinking to the same tune and my truck doesn't seem to care if I cycle it or not, it makes no difference as to how well it starts, so I'm back to thinking it's the glow plugs. I bought some off Ebay, so I guess I'll be replacing them this week and I've got my fingers crossed that that will fix it. Thanks for all your help so far. Any more ideas?
No, I haven't replaced that. The starter engages fine, isn't that what the solenoid does? Today when I started my truck up, I paid a little closer attention. The wait to start light stays on for quite a while too, like it's trying to get it up to the temperature it's supposed to be at. The only thing that baffles me, is that it doesn't seem to blow any smoke. I bought some Motorcraft glow plugs off Ebay, so I guess I'll be replacing them this week and I've got my fingers crossed that that will fix it. Thanks for all your help so far. Any more ideas?
Keep us posted Woody. I'm going to get my batteries load tested soon. Last time I had them load tested they were still in series. Going to have them tested one at a time.

My truck finally had enough today. It wouldn't start at all and after only two or three times of trying to turn it over for a couple seconds each, the batteries started sounding pretty weak. Since they are the original batteries(almost 6 years old), I decided it wouldn't hurt to replace them. Put the new batteries in and it started right up. I wish I would have done that sooner, I've been dealing with this problem for almost a year. My truck has never turned over so fast in the three years I've had it, it's always dragged a little and now that I think of it, when I've heard other diesels start up, they sound like mine does now. Thanks for all your help. I've got some glow plugs for sale if anyone needs them. LOL
Just got back from having the batteries load tested one at a time. Tested fine. No sooner then I got in the truck to start it after having them tested it did the clicking again. Mechanic believes I might have a bad cell in one of the batteries causing it only to happen once in a while. Will replace batteries soon and give results.
