went to the sportsmans warehouse today to price out rifles.
found a Stainless Steel, SUPER nice wood stock Ruger MKII- which also had the numbers km77rbz on the tag, that might have just been the store code or maybe its the specific modle. its extrememly light weight, really nice, comes with scope mount and rings. it was 7mm. $510.00
1) does $510.00 sound like a good price?
2) how accurate are these rifles?
3) reliability?
4) would a black scope on a stainless steel / wood stock model look goofy?
5) any other suggestions?
i think i will be buying it thursday if it gets enough
Very nice rifle - the KM77RBZ is Ruger's catalog number, and their suggested retail price is $750 for this 7 1/2 to 8 lb, stainless finish, brown laminate stock, bolt action shooting machine. (Nobody ever pays suggested retail - I don't know why they even list it.)
In my opinion, a black scope looks funny on a stainless rifle, but that's only my opinion. I've seen the combination many times, and bit my tongue. The difference in price is minimal, and I think that matching the stainless finish makes the rifle look a lot more professional. I have a similar rifle with a black synthetic stock, and a stainless Leupold scope, because I've frequently been out in the middle of rain, snow and sleet, and I wanted a functional tool more than a wall-hanging display model. I changed out the noisy "stirrup" sling mounts for some Uncle Mikes stainless sling studs w/ swivels, and I installed a custom, adjustable trigger to lighten up the pull to around 2 1/2 lb. I also polished up the safety, to let it slide smoothly between detents, and eliminate the "click".
It's a fine gun to begin with, and you can make it as good as you want it to be.
ok- the reason i mentioned putting a BLACK scope on a stainless rifle is because i just happen to have a Leupold 6.5-20X40 Vari-x 3 sitting in my gun safe, i paid 550 for it, it sells for about 700 now, so i might go with the stainless steel / black synthetic stock, looks pretty good then.
Sounds nice - I'm trying to picture it in my mind's eye, but I can't envision how the stainless rings will appear wrapped around a black scope. It's one of those things where you have to assemble it and then stand back and take a look. Something I noticed in the catalog was that the Mark II family of M77s all appear to have sling mount studs factory attached - even the synthetic stocks. That's great, because the stirrup style, though plenty strong, is noisy, and not fit for stalking. I've seen guys duct tape them to the stock to keep them from rattling, which is real attractive. Ever been out hunting/shooting with a guy who was carrying an old rifle with a cracked stock wrapped up with baling wire and electrical tape? Remember the thoughts running through your head? You probably don't want people thinking those kinda things about you - forming negative opinions ahead of time about your abilities, without even seeing you shoot.
I have a M77, mine is tricked out a bit, but even when it was factory it shot very well. The trigger was the only complaint about it that I had. I put in a Timney trigger, and free floated/glass bedded the stock. If you get the laminate/synthetic, you don't need to worry about the free floating and glass bedding.
I own two of the Rugers in stainless and one in blue steel, all have the flat black Leupold scopes on them. I personally like the look and less shine in the woods when hunting. Nice guns.
i did it!!! paid $450 for a KM77RFP <-- ? in 7mm magnum, stainless steel finish, black synthetic stock, came with rings / scope mount. i had them put on my leupold 6.5-20X40 scope, bought stainless sling swivels and it looks SWEET! im just putting a $4.00 black nylon sling on it, i like the narrow non padded slings they seem to hang up less when removing them from your shoulder.
i will shoot it this weekend hopefully, and if i dont like the trigger ill get in touch with you guys to find out where to get a better one.
i didnt check if the stock was free floating, ill do that later tonight. thanks for the info!!
Synthetic stocks are all the same, so yes its technically free floating.
Take a screwdriver and open the loading gate, and torque down on that screw til it won't move anymore. Then get the ones holding the scope and the ones holding the rings.
I used to have one in 30-06 and my only complaint was the trigger. Its already been mentioned before, the Timney trigger is a relatively inexpensive upgrade that will probably cut your groups in half.
Now get out there an shoot that thing and report back. I have some good handloads worked up for my 7mm if you need any recipes
Just yesterday received my copy of the premier issue of Free Hunter magazine, put out by the NRA. On p.9 is a Bushnell ad showing a matte finish scope on a stainless Remington 700, with matching matte black scope rings - looks nice. Inside the rear cover is a Shooting Illustrated ad showing a black scope on a stainless Savage 12 with stainless rings. IMHO the Remington machine looks much better, and far more professional.
I have 4 Rugers M77, 1 in .270 blued wood , 1 in .300mag tricked out and 1 in .223 target grey stainless lamint, just bought the new .204 this weekend in stainless with lamint.
They all have leupold scopes in differnt powers. I love Rugers they are some of the strongest and safest guns on the market, however in the trigger they all get a good tunning. I hope you like your new Ruger.

That's a bit more than I'd spend on a gun...
To each their own.
However I still believe the Remington Model 710 is one of the best bargains for the money. I've had two of them... both .270 caliper. Apparently someone else agreed with me and took my first one.
I got the first one for $367 bucks tax and all... Comes with a Bushnell 3x9-40 scope
The second one, i got brand new... from a pawn shop. I knew the owner and some guy pawned it after Christmas. I took the scope off, and put a Simmons 3x9-50 on it and I love it even more. I spent around 850 bucks for both guns and the third scope.
And that's what some guns sale for alone.
I've shot a dime off a fence post at 100 yards many times with this gun. Shoots a pattern smaller than a quarter everyday. I'm sold on this gun, and would buy another one.
I'm also not very found of the 7mm, as I've seen them tear up a deer severly and ruin a lot of meat.
Just throwing in my opinion
Also, the Black scope on a stainless gun may look funny, but it will work til you can trade the scope off or buy a new one.
Good luck on your purchase.
That's weird... I've never seen one of those guns do that.
I've had 2, my buddy has one, and Ive seen several displays and people in the field using them.
