ok guys im replacing the wacky-do electrical on an 84 that had the electronic carb/ tfi combo. i gotta carb but my two choices for ignition systems would be a duraspark distributor/msd 6a combo or a points with the igniter. which would you prefer?
Muscle, I'd go with the Duraspark/MSD combo, if it were me. Or Durasprsk and whatever other computer helper you like. The Duraspark dizzy really is the best for your Ford. DF, @ his Dad's
msd suck. i have an hei conversion and my tach is working fine and what does starting hard mean, is that where the motor barely turns over like a dead battery, that means too much timing advance. but back to msd, it burns out quicker than stock and is way overpriced, plus it is analog. why not get with new age if you are going to go aftermarket and get something that is digital and cheaper.
everybody around at different sites have problems with msd. i just checked jegs and summits and although msd's prices have severely dropped there are still lower prices on digital items
What digital ignitions are you talking about? I haven't really looked, so I'm not saying they aren't out there. I have had nothing but good experiences with MSD's products...
Go with the Duraspark & a Jacob's kit. That's what I run in my Ranchero. Never misfires, dependable. I even run the same spark plugs the whole drag racing season. They have a kit where the amplifier isn't needed, just hook to the distributor.
after you click on a link a fte pop up will come up, scroll down and click on the link where it says "i'd rather look at the company that doesn't support fte".
Yes, but the Crane is inductive, and I'm not a big fan of Mallory products (not a big fan of Jacobs either for that matter). Not to say they aren't good products, though, I just don't have any experience with them. There has to be a reason MSD is so popular, and I'm sure it's not because they break all the time. Why do you say analog bad?
i am not really but i am just relaying what other members told me. i used to like them until i heard all the problems people have with the dizzies burning out. i don't know if they actually help out or not, and that goes for all ignition boxes.
ok. first of all i was not saying that i was %100 for msd, im always open to suggestions, i have just always heard good stuff about msd.
with my bronco it was not cranking slow due to ignition advance, it just didn't want to fire off, no matter what i did (carb, timing, and starting habits). and the tach always read 2000 or so rpm more than what it was running. i went back to the duraspark but kept the coil and did better than both hei and stock.
I have an accel distubor with a built in modular and it is probably a nicer set-up then the msd and its way better then the durspark stuff that comes stock. I just spiced into the factory harness (just one plug in) put a set of gauges in and scraped the old harness and i haven't had a single problem. I have pictures of it in my gallery if you want to see how its set-up.
