my roommate is listening to some music and the singer mentioned a bobtail rig...made me wonder about all the trucker lingo i hear out on the interstate - anybody know any cool phrases or sayings or heard any crazy stuff worth mentioning? the only story i really remember is running alongside a semi down the mountains in w.v. and him bashin ole petunia for bein slow...i didn't tell him all i had was a worn out, badly-timed, rich-runnin, who-knows-what-else straight six. yes, the best motor ford ever made, but not common in a full size bronco.
I'm way out in Hawaii, but can hear the truckers down South talkin on their CB's better than I can hear the guy in the next boat one mile from me. Channel 23 is used for fishing out here, but almost every time I turn on the radio I might hear some guy in Alabama looking for his exit or a truck stop. I don't know what channel they are really on, but I can hear them clearly on two or three channels. Just how much power are they pumping to walk over the entire South Pacific? 5000 watts? What's the matter with a nicely tuned 4 watts?
It's probably the phenomen called "skip". Years ago, I had talked to other CBers in Europe and South America as if they were just down the road, using an old $50 CB.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Mar-02 AT 09:56 AM (EST)]When I drove truck for 7 yrs and got out of it but find myself still useing some of the cb lingo in everyday life. the ones that really come to mind are the scales being called the "chicken house" rest areas being called "pickle parks" and the women that walked around the parking lotsof truck stops " commercial company or the ever favorite lot lizard" and the retread laying in the middle of the road was called a "gator or aligator" it took my wife awhile to figure that one out. then the Monfort lane was the left or hammer down lane
was given the name monfort lane cuz Monfort Meats out of CO had some fast trucks and they would just move out in the left lane. Construction barrels were called Schnieder eggs named after those ugly orange slow trucks. and when you saw a driver that drove for a company named Swift they were called Sure Wish I hada Fast Truck.
I know there are alot of others but those are some you would hear all the time from coast to coast
Reminds me of a funny story.
Back when my dad drove for Eastern Express (a large east coast carrier at the time), he got my cousin a summer job on the docks loading the trucks at night. He dropped him off at one of their terminals, and told him he should catch a ride with a bobtailer back to his terminal in the morning. When the shift was over and he didn't show up the next morning, my dad got worried and called. My cousin had spent the whole morning asking around and looking for a guy named Bob Taylor. LOL
I can remember a few....
Seat covers ...................Female passengers
bubble gum machine.............Police car lights
Piggy bank.....................Toll booth
Greasy spoon ..................Diner
Taking pictures................Radar
Stabbers and grabbers..........Knife and fork
Does anyone remember what a Wig-Wag was? There might have been other names for it also.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Mar-02 AT 01:55 PM (EST)]I drove a 1964 Damond Reo one time hauling gravel and it had a wig wag which were also used for the old vaccum brakes on the big trucks and air pressure well one time I was supposed to deliver a load to a house and the guy would stand out on the road directing us trucks into the right spot the driveway was midway down a hill I crested the hill and startted going down this guy was waving his arms for me to pull in and i went to slow down the wig wag dropped and i sailed right on by the look on that guys face was hilarious. But who remembers the old twin stick Diamond Reo's and the old twin stick Mack's boy they were a trick to drive one arm in the steering whell grabbing one stick and the other shiftting the other stick and if you missed a gear you had to stop and start all over again.
Don't want to brag or anything but,I could split shift and old
Diamond REO by my 16th Birthday.
I might even have a photo of me with the concrete truck.

Yeah the old wig wag may be a bit before my time, but the old man has been driving logging truck as long as I can remember and I'm pretty sure the old '78 Cat powered Kenworth (he had ##### power on the bug deflector) had one. When I would grease it on the weekend I would have to flip that bad boy up after we had air so I could move it around in the yard, just so Mom wouldn't kick my butt when the blobs of grease fell off.
Speaking of Convoy, does anybody know where i can buy a copy? I've never been able to find one, either to rent or buy, but I've heard it's the ultimate trucker movie, and that means I must have it. Smokey and the Bandit you say? yeah, I got it. Please Help!!
All this trucker talk is super entertaining. At least if i never drive I can talk like i did! lol
