Does anyone have had to apply for a title when buying a vechile?
Here's my problem.
I bought an 1979 F350 Supercab 4x4. When I exaimed the title, I noticed the VIN on the title was odd. Turns out it wasn't the correct title. I contacted the previous owner and he was surprised he got the wrong title.
Today I finally found the VIN off the truck. It indeed does not match with the title. So I bought the truck without a title.
Can I apply for a title by myself and legally own the truck? I also have a bill of sale supplied by the previous owner, signed by me and the previous owner.
I know some states doesn't require titles on older vechiles. However, my state (Maryland) require titles for any vechile.
I'll speak with the DMV...meanwhile, I'm open to suggestions.
You should be able to get the DMV to check the last registered owner and allow you to contact them for a release, assuming the vehicle is not stolen, salvaged, or otherwise ineligible for titleing. You will probably have to pay a fee for the service.
If you have difficulty with that, the seller should refund your money and take back the truck, or face fraud charges.
>So, The Frame VIN # & the Cab VIN # Match, but the title
>doesn't match these numbers?
The cab VIN plate is missing. I believe the driver's door is original as well.
So, I'm only going by frame VIN # which does not match the title's numbers. The title calls for a 1979 Regular Cab F250 4x4 with a 351M built in Mawahk, NJ plant.
Just curious...I wonder if it would help you any to run the VIN through Carfax.com. It of course wouldn't tell you who the owner was last, but might be able to tell you if it was ever damaged to the point that someone may have swapped some parts around.
Sounds more and more like trouble heading your way. People buy wrecked, legal trucks just for the papwerwork, go steal a similar vehicle, and then use the viin from the legal vehicle. A guy up the road from me just got raided for this sort of activity. Be cautious and ask the owner to accompany you to DMV. Watch his reaction closely.
