I'm seriously considering a 2005 F-350 drw and I'm wondering what will happen if I buy now and Ford comes out with cash rebates in the next month or two. Is there any way to make the deal so the rebates will be retroactive?
Are you talking about buying one RIGHT NOW, off a dealer's lot, or ordering one? If you take delivery now, and they come out with a rebate later, oh well. If you order one now, and there's a rebate in effect at the time of delivery, then you'll get that rebate. Do you have time to wait for an order? It would certainly pay to do so.
Jeff, I'm considering putting a deposit on a truck already on the lot, but not taking delivery until mid Sept. Your question (and statement "It would certainly pay to do so") implies that cash rebates may be coming out in the near future. Is that a correct inference on my part or just wishful thinking?
I'm buying the truck to pull a custom order fifth wheel trailer that should be ready mid sept. I can probably leave the truck and the trailer on their respective lots longer before making the actual purchases. However, since I'm planning to take advantage of the California "out of state delivery" sales tax regulation I have to take physical delivery before Oct 1 when the law is slated to change.
The tax law is Regulation 1620 and is explained in detail in Publication 52 - both available from the CA State BOE website: http://www.boe.ca.gov/info/boelist.htm. It exempts vehicles purchased out of state and not for use in Calfornia from sales tax.
The law has two provisions.
1. Any vehicle purchased out of state and used (not stored) out of state for more than 90 days prior to entering California is exempt from sales tax.
2. Any vehicle purchased out of state AND used first out of state before being brought into California will not be subject to sales tax if it is used or stored out of state for more than 50% of the first six months following its first entry into the state.
It works for me because I'm planning to travel full time (outside California) within a couple months of purchasing the trailer and the truck.
It appears that the governor has, or is about to sign a new law that either changes or eliminates the provision effective October 1. The last thing I read indicated it would be changed to 180 days (provision 1) and more than 50% of the first 12 months (provision 2).

So, Mark, are you indicating that Sep may bring larger & better rebates &/or incentives ?
ArtJ, If you keep this truck out of state for a couple of months, where are you going to license it? The trip ticket from N.Y. is only good for 30 days. Thanks for your time Art.
I'll take delivery out of state, drive it back to California, go the BOE and get a tax waiver (form BOE-111), and then register the vehicle with the CA DMV. From that point the vehicle must be used or stored outside CA for more than 50% of the first 6 months following the vehicle's first entry into CA. That means you can take it back out and use or store it out of state with CA plates.
The only thing the BOE tax rep told me about storing it out of state is that you must use it out of state each time before bringing it back into CA - you can go back and forth as much as you want, but for the time out to be considered as part of the 50% you must use it before you bring it back in. He was not clear about what "use" means, so I wrote the BOE a letter asking for clarification. Will let you know what they say when they respond. Unfortunately, it usually takes 3-4 wks to get a response.
In my case, I'll be keeping it in CA for a couple of months and then heading out for parts unknown. Therefore, I will easily be using it out of state for more than 50% of the first 6 mos.
One thing to be aware of is that they will probably audit you after the six months. If you don't have the proper documentation you may have to pay the sales tax and a penalty.

My point was, if you're going to buy a 2005 Super-Duty, they currently have a $0 rebate. IF Ford were to add a rebate while your truck was on order, say $500, then you'd be $500 ahead to order than to buy off the lot right now. If they don't add a rebate, then you haven't lost anything by ordering.
Buying right now = $0 rebate, ordering = maybe getting a rebate.
