I have an STX and the rail system wasnt available. Just out of curiosity, can the rail be installed out of the factory? I wouldnt mind some of the storage and functionality of it.
I would advise against the rail system. It's ugly looking and not functional at all. You can maybe store a pair of sunglasses in it or maybe one CD. Of all the great features of this truck, the rail system is the worst design (next to the fan blowing full blast when you turn on the AC).
I've always wondered the same thing, but worry about posting a new topic here... Getting shot down isn't my thing.
It looks like the dome light would need to be relocated, but other than that I don't see why it wouldn't work. I would love the extra storage of the rail system in my STX. Thanks in advance for any help.
I would have to disagree. If the rails are left open they don't look great but when they are filled I think they look good and are functional. I use it for my glasses, CDs, checkbook, etc. Keeps me from digging into the huge center console for the stuff. I'm more excited by what's coming down the pike with electronic add ons. The kids love the factory DVD player and that alone makes it worthwhile.
For storage, I think it would be easier to get an overhead shelf unit that mounts above the visors. This may even give you more space for storage. Shelf-it makes some but I am not sure what the price is.

I asked Ford if the rail system could be added to my STX, and they said no way. If it did not come with it, you ain't getting it.

Eww, i think those are even uglier, at least the rail system would look factory, and have compartments rather than a "shelf"

I too inquired with the dealer on the possibility of adding the rail system to my STX. Their answer was - no.
That just makes getting one in there that much more fun! Like "asinatra" said, anything is possible, and adding a rack system to a truck that isn't supposed to have it means its custom. Anything custom is worth trying....

I actually called four dealerships, and got the same response. I also talked to a svc. mgr. at one of them, and he said no too.
I guess you are right, anything is possible as far as custom, but something like that would make me nervous. Not worth ruining my truck over.

IMHO, the rail system is only non-functional IF YOU DON'T USE IT!
Sure as is, it's just a place to hold a cell phone, but the whole point of it is to get the bins and add-ons tailored to your needs.

What type of add ons are available? It seems such a waste of space to hold a pair of sunglasses or cellphone only. Also the latch on it does not seem "built to last."

I don't know them all, but you can get a bin that holds Black & Decker rechargeable Snakelights, a power inverter, DVD player, DVD/CD holder, first aid kit and I think a PDA holder.
