I hunted whitetail for about 12 years with a 12 ga, smooth bore, improved cyl. Anything inside of 50 yards is dead meat. Between 50 and 100 it's a combination of luck and skill (mostly skill on my part) to hit your spot, but when you do, it's still dead meat. Every deer I shot rolled in the dirt, even with non-lethal hits (which I may or may not talk about later). Most of the time the slug laid up against a rib or a shoulder blade, and never exited, which means 100% transfer of energy, which is what you want when you're killing stuff.
With a rifled barrel, you can shoot 3 inch groups offhand at 100 yards. The rifling doesn't increase the power or the range of the gun, but it does increase the effective range of the hunter. At about $100, it's cheaper than a rifle, but if most of your shots are inside of 50 yards, the only benefit is a deer that's been killed more accurately, but is just as dead.
I'll just admit now that I can't hit the broad side of a barn, so I need all the help my rifled barrel will give me. Mostly because I never get to practice with it. And the sabot slugs are like $1.50 each! No where to shoot in the off-season, so am limited to picking off gophers with a BB gun, which is not like a shotgun in the least. Maybe when I move back to MN, I will get the bird barrel for pheasant. I think I paid about $600 for it 2 years ago. It was very reasonably priced, I think. I just wish I could use it more!
I have 2 guns, an early model Marlin 30-30, and some old .22 Neither of them are "registered", having been in the family for many years. The feds only know I buy ammunition for them once in awhile.
I'm ready for the next revolution!
i am pricing a 30 inch barrel for the remington now. want to get one with a way to screw in a choke if i want to. want it in matte black like my slug barrel with a vented type sight line at the top. one of the coolest things i like about the remington is how versatile it is, changing out the barrels, adding a choke, or the type of ammo, or the stocks and you have a few different options for the need. put a longer barrel on it for hunting, put the 20 back on for home protection.
i wanted to pick up a winchester 30-30 today, but i am holding out for the winchester .45 caliber lever action with the 24"+ barrel.
