I have a '91 Silver Aniversary Edition Bronco and when I start it the engine won't turn back off. The other night this all started and ever since I have to pull the coil wire to get the engine to stop. I thought it might be the lock cylinder because it seems to be much looser when you turn the key since this started. I changed that out but it wasn't any help. The new one feels just as loose. I'm not at all familiar with this and how the ignition works so I'm not sure what to check next. Is it something mechanical in the steering column or is it electrical? I really don't know what to think about this. So far I've pulled the steering wheel and replaced the lock cylinder but that's all I've done. I sure hope someone can help. I don't mind tearing into it more but just want some information on what might be happening first. I don't want to go into this totally blind. Thanks in advance for any help.
there is a ignition switch in the dash that could be messed up, or the actuator is a rod between the key cylinder and the ignition switch you might want to check those out
i dont think it does i think the relay has all the wires except the starter on one side
it is just a high amp switch that allows power directly to the starter from the pos bat cable all the other wires are connected to the same side as the pos bat cable
another thing im thinking about now is the icm but i would definatly check the switch and actuator first
I agree with beasty about the actuator rod. There is a rod that goes down the steering column from the cylinder to the ignition switch. It may have disconnected in the column, or broke, so when you turn to start...it will push against it to start the truck, but not pull it back to turn it off.
Does anyone know how hard to change out the actuator rod is if I have to change it out? I haven't been able to look at it yet but I should be able to work on it Friday and Saturday. I really appreciate y'all helping me out. I'll let you know when I get it fixed what it ended up being. Thanks again.
Remove the bottom of the dash under the steering column and you will see 2 large bolts, one each side of the steering column. Remove those and the column will drop down giving you access to the end at the switch and then you can remove the rest of the column cover and see the end at the cylinder.
yea dude if the key turns ur acctuator rod is broke the bitch is that u gotta take the column apart to get at it and change it. the part was like 10 bucks from ford but it will take u some time and patience to put it in
Well, turns out it wasn't the rod itself. It was the piece the rod attaches to on the key side. Not sure what to call it other than what the package says from Ford. They call it the actuator. Anyway, my Ford house says it's the most common part to fail for this and they were right. I appreciate y'alls help. It wasn't too difficult to replace thanks to your insight. Thanks again. The hardest part was to get the key cylinder to line up right again. Once that was done the rest was pretty simple.
