I have a '87 F150 4x4 with a 300 in it. We are currently overhauling the engine. It will be .030 over, balanced, Schneider 270-80H cam (which the supplier says will work with the stock computer), 19# injectors & adjustable pressure regulator, & EFI exaust manifolds.
I now need to decide what ignition to run. I am keeping the stock distibutor and computer. I am running out of budget, so I have looking on Ebay at MSD 6A, Mallory HyFire, and Crane ignitions, coils, and wires. Which ones will work, and which are the best? Can I run something like an Accel Super Coil, or do I need to stay with a TFI unit like the Crane PS92? Will an MSD 5200 series box work? Any other help would be greatly appreciated. I can't afford new, but I also can't afford to waste money on something that won't work. Thanks. Mark.
You will have to run a TFI coil, if you are going to maintain all your original electronics.
Any ignition system, i'd assume would do just fine, i don't know the peculiarity of any of them since i've never had a reason to run an aftermarket box. I've always relied on the factory ignition system.
Personally if i had to choose i'd go with MSD 6A, as i've heard lots of good stuff about this one, and is very dependable. Others may be just as good.
i've heard the exact opposite about the msd. i know mallory and crane ignitions are very trusting boxes but you probably will see very little gains if any by switching from stock.
At the RPM range a 300 runs at, even a higher reving built 300, a $20 napa HEI module triggering a duraspark distributor with a post-'77 wide cap cannot not be beat, Period, If your not going to keep the stock computer.
Its the only upgrade that actually improves on the blue colored duraspark box for this application. anything else is just spending money for speed parts.

exactly my point. i did the HEI on my 89 carbed notch stang and couldn't be happier. while other stangers on stangnet gripe and worry why there cars aint firing or why it is cutting off while driving, i am laughing and enjoying my cheap and working HEI conversion.
The new Mallory Hyfire boxes will hook up to the TFI no problem. You can splice it in [very easy] or pay $20 extra and get a nice custom plug-in wiring harness. Not 100% sure, but you should be able to use whatever coil you want as the new ig box is now running it. MSD's blaster 2 is the best "standard" performance coil and perfect for this engine, anything more is overkill. Just make sure to get the version made for a CD ignition box [# 8202], not points. Went with a Mallory 6a over the MSD because it's a true digital ignition [MSD is analog], and draws only half the current so it runs cooler.
Have always been a big MSD fan, but the new Malloy boxes are doing a better job for less $$. The guts of the standard MSD 6a/ 6al haven't changed in ages. It's old tech today but their prices have not dropped at all. My Mallory 6a/ blaster 2 coil combo was just $135. Really wanted to get the 6al with the rev limiter, but decided to put that extra $50 into a tach and use my right foot as the limiter :-)
Anyone know anything about Holley Annihilator ignition boxes? I have a chance to buy a brand new one (part # 800-100) with a new Holley LaserShot coil (part # 820-200)for $80, but I'm not sure if it will work on my truck. Thanks. Mark.

Got any part #s for the HEI/Duraspark swap ??
What year/model trucks can one rob parts off of for this swap ??
I had a Mallory on my truck before the MSD. It ate itself and a coil. I have used about all the major ignition systems on my vehicles and my customer's vehicles; MSD is all I trust.
If you decide to do this drive around with a spare coil in your glove box. CDI (as well as all high performance) coils fail more quickly than stock style ones.
