I have recently purchased a 2004 F-350 Super Duty Crew Cab with the 6 Ltr. Power Stroke Diesel. I have 10,000 Kms.
on it and I am getting a surging problem on deceleration and Idle.
Had it in to the shop 4 times they can't find a problem. I now have a data recorder in the truck to record the conditions when there is a problem.
has any one else had this problem? and what solutions are available.
Code three. Who told you it was a bad engine? If what you say in your post on other thread, you read about what the problem was from another site. Don't jump to conclusions or spread bad info.
Surging is usually caused by bad sensor(s), wire chafing or the need of a flash.
SBV45, I'm not jumping to conclusions about my engine or spreading bad info,. I was already told by the Ford tech that I have a bad engine (bad crank) that requires replacement of the entire engine. Maybe I needed to clarify. Just the facts.
Thanks

No problem. I am sorry to hear that. Just that we have had some jump on this forum and make multiple posts across threads with a real horror story. It is doubtful that it is true. You did a quick post leaving out some detail and it sounded, well trollish.
Not all 6.0s are bad. I believe most are good. With mass manufacturing processes, you can get some bad ones. Sorry to hear you got one.
It doesn't make a lot of sense to put an 04 engine in an 03 truck. There are almost 30 differences between the 03 and 04 which would make putting an 04 in an 03 a lot of extra work. Makes me wonder if the dealer was blowing smoke up your exhaust.
Some surge issues have been fixed by VGT Valve replacement...some by a simple reflash (wish I could remember which one)...some by a combo of changes.
Make sure your tech is certified for diesel then exchange ideas if he is running into diagnostic problems. Caution though...most people don't like to be told how to do
their job. Discussion and guidance I guess.
PLease provide engine build date. It would be interesting to try and see if build dates are relative to this problem.
Good luck.
code three: Would appreciate your build date also. Interesting that your bad engine is a CA truck. So have they ordered your engine? Has Ford approved the replacement?
How many miles on the bad engine and when did the symptons start? And did your bad engine symptoms start with surging or something else?
SBV45: Please remind me (if it should EVER come up) to never by a CA truck or one that is from there. Thanks in advance.
I to am experiencing the surge and die problem, took it to my dealer in Phoenix, AZ they read the computer and could find no problems. Did it 3 more times took to new dealer in Boise, Idaho again read the computer and said no problems, Did it 3 more times this week so will be seeing dealer again this week. Really scary when towing 12,000 pound 5th wheel trailer when you can't stop. Hope someone comes up with a fix really soon. This is my second 6.0-liter, the first one was perfect and got better mileage but made the loud bang when starting. I wonder if the old original program was better than the new quiet start program.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
Mike, read my post regarding BAD Engine. I had the same problem and came to find out that I had a bad engine.

.
A surging problem is usually caused by a computer glitch, malfunctioning sensor or VGT valve or chafed wiring in between.
Surging problems can also be caused by putting 16 quarts of oil in the engine and thus overfilling it by 1.05 quarts.
There are other things that can cause surging but you get the idea. Unless there is a major failure(and I have never seen one) the ENGINE is fine.

Just had the 10,000KM service done will see if new fuel filters help.
Thank you all for your responses.
Mike
Mike, check your oil level. putting any more than 14 quarts into the engine will cause the crankshaft to beat the oil to foam. Once in this state it will not operate the injectors consistantly.
The reason for this is that the high pressure oil system holds 1.05 quarts that does not drain. If you put 15 quarts in it, you are .05 quarts over full. 16 quarts 1.05 over.
