I've found that any of the oils I've tried have worked fine...
Check the oil test in my gallery - more than happy with the fact that I can extend it to 7500 mile intervals...
My V10 model specifies 5W-20 motor oil. But I've heard that in other countries where the X is sold, (countries that do not have 5W-20 oil available) the specification calls for good ol' 10W-30 ... which is what I'm running. I believe 5W-20 oil was specified for the sole purpose of getting the last little bit of MPG out of the X, and nothing else. Oil that "thin" does not offer as much wear-protection compared to the others.
Since you have a diesel, make sure you use an oil with a CH or CI rating. Oils rated SH and SJ, gas engine oils, don't have the additive package necessary for a diesel to live a long and healthy life.
Well, I have a 2000 PSD. I went to Wallyworld to pick up the "manual" recommended 15W-40, but no dice. All I found was 20W-50, or 10W-40, not 15W-40.
Also on the block, is moving to synthetic oil (Mobil 1). The engine has 88k on it & I don't know what the previous own ran.
I think you were looking in the wrong oil section. Those weights, and Mobil 1, are all gas engine oils. There should be a much much smaller section of oil down on one end with names like "Rotella T" and "Delo." The oil should have a CH-4 or CI-4 rating in the little API rating starburst, instead of or in addition to any S ratings.
