replacing open rear w/ LS?

1-what is involved in changing out my open rear (code 19) 3.55 on my 2002 Screw KR with a locking type rear.

2-who/where to buy locking rears for the f-150's?

thanks

Rick

You need the carrier, you may have to buy the clutch pack to install. It does require special tools to get the proper clutch pack clearance. You can switch the ring gear to the new carrier, but you will have to rest backlash clearance. I don't know who makes them for the aftermarket, but I'm shure there is one. Someone here should be able to help with that one.

Alot of companies sell a drop in diff for these trucks. I am going to buy an eaton for my 98 nascar truck, it has a 3.73 open diff.

The eaton is about 400 bucks for the diff, and the install does not require any backlash adjustment or anything like that. It is a bolton. You don't have to touch the ring gear.

Ebay is an excellent place to find a used factory LS unit. I paid 40 bucks plus shipping for a complete low milage Track lok LS carrier plus ring gear, shims, etc. Stripped off the ring gear and pinion and resold it on ebay for $30 plus shipping.

You can diy, but if you have never done such a change before, I definately reccomend taking it into a shop and having them install it for you, or finding a buddy that knows what's going on.

I did mine my self, but I have done a few in past years so it really isnt a big deal for me.

Look into Auburn gear limited slips and they also have a limited slip with a electronic locker. They are really good.

I put an Eaton posi in my 8.8/ 3.55 rear two months ago. They are a nice unit. They cost about a hundred moor then a Ford track-Lock but they should last longer between clutch replacements. We will see about that?

You will need to transfer the ring gear over to the new unit, re shim the carrier bearings which sets the back lash to where it was with the original open rear end. If you don't do this you could damage the ring and pinion gears. You will need a dial indicator and mag stand to do this. It is not too hard . You will need to get the bearings pressed on be for you install the posi. If you don't have a press get a repair shop to press them for you .
