I have a 8" rearend from a Mustang that I am putting into a 1950 F-1 with a 302/C4 combo. I want to change the gear ratio from the 2.79 in the current third member. I am doing a salvage yard search and need to know what years the 8" was used and in what vehicles. Any help is appreaciated
You may luck out and get one from the scrappy, but these were kind of a weak diff and if they've been out in the elements for years, you could have real howler with used one. (like the one I got for $50 in 1971.)
Mustang II's are your best for finding a set of gears. Buying used 8 inch gears can be exspensive and hard to find. If your looking for a trac loc then be ready to pay for one. About twice the cost of a 9 unit.
Also, your Mustang housing may be a real lightweight....they warn against using the 9 inch Mustang housings....., not sure if there is a lightweight 8" housing.

There are banjo style housings that are weaker than the newer style truck housings. Banjo style housings couold be found in older trucks as well as cars.
