Ok what's going on with my 96 7.3 diesel?? Just yesterday my check engine light came on and is running real rough seems like its starving for fuel... but than it goes away and runs great for a little while and does it again.. I replaced the fuel filter but of course can't be that lucky has anyone had this or herd of this problem before please help thanks Marcus....
There was no hard code problems but continues to run REALLY rough with check engine light on.. I had a couple buddies tell me possible bad injector or injector wiring harness... I'm going to have to bite the bullet i guess and take it to the dealer ouch $99 and hour for there time..
The injector harness sounds like a good possibility. You can check that yourself. Disconnect the harness's where they connect at the valvecover and look for a burned pin. Just one will do it.
Yep figures injector harness on passenger side and the cam sensor is bad aswell so the full harness o rings and sensor plus Fords lovely hourly rate (RAPE) $1300 later my truck will be good again... Anyone interested in a 96 f250 7.3 powerstroke extended cab long bed????
You know, you can do all that stuff yourself and only be out like $300, and most of it isn't even that hard... There are plenty of threads out here about doing O-rings and CPS sensors...
I agree with Rancha9. Hall effect triggered camshaft position sensor sounds like a whole mouthful of stuff but in reality you can change out the CPS in less than 10 minutes with no special tools. Wipe off the area, pull the electrcal plug off, remove a 10mm bolt, pull the sensor out. Stick the new one in, ($100 or less from Navistar), replace the bolt and reconnect the sensor. Your dealership sounds like the type that might charge you $85 for for a diagnostic, $90 for an hour labor, and $200 for the CPS. That saves a good bit right there.
If you insist on selling it PM me, but think about taking it to a competent mechanic outside your dealership. I think you can get it done much cheaper than $1300, or do it yourself for even less.
MY 02 with 42k on it is doing the same thing,
starts up rough, engine light on, runs like its choking and after 2-5 miles it light goes off and it will run fine until its sits for more than a few hours.
It would seem to me if a harness was bad, it just would not fix it self in a few miles. And after reading alot of the CPS postings, the symptoms dont seem to match (no tach, stalling, loss of power etc.)
Yes I spent $1300 for new engine harness, cam sensor, valve cover gasket ect... It runs like a new truck but **** it better after dropping that much $$$ My truck did it only a little once in a while for about a month and than boom for 2 straight days wouldn't snap out of it real rough check eng light stayed on didn't go back off.. So yeah it's probably starting to go bad for you or some other freak thing going on.. Yes like I said it runs damn good now but it cost too damn much.. I love the truck but I'm going to sale it and go back to Toyota sorry Ford guys but I have had no problems in the past when I've had Toyota's just cost soo damn much but i guess they say you get what you pay for....... Don't want to but it's going up for sale 7.3 auto ext cab long bed white with blue int...
