AC cools, warms, then cools again

Hi,
I have a 97 f-150 4x4 4.9 litre eng. and when I turn on my AC it works fine for about 20 min. and then turns warm with a musty smell for about 5-10 min. and then it gets cold again. The freon levels seem to be OK but was wondering if it could be a cycle switch or something. Any info would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks, RShad

It is probably a cycling switch or sticking relay if the freon level is full. However there is no 97 F150 with a 4.9..

Thanks for your quick responce. Just a slip of the keypad on the 4.9 I have a 4.6L engine. Is there much involved with changing the cycling switch? I think that is what a friend of mine had wrong once but it cost him like $120.00 in labor.

It just screws on the accumulator, takes all of about 5 to 10 minutes.

I picked up a cycling switch from ford but I am not sure it is the right one. Do I want the A/C clutch cycling switch or just the plain cycling switch. I don't have a picture that I can go by but I think one(clutch switch) has a round plug connector and one (cycling sw) has a oval connector.

Your cycling switch should look like this...

Early Fords with R134 systems used one that looks like this...

Thanks for you responce, the pictures helped alot. The switch that I have is a little smaller at the bottom where you use a wrench. I think this is the AC Clutch cycle switch (part # F5TZ-19D594-AA)that go's on the low presure line. I asked the parts guy for the AC Cycling swicth and this is what he gave me. Both switches are I guess cycling switches. I will have to get the other one tomorrow from Ford. Would you happen to know the Ford part number? I have a 4.6L eng. 4x4 F-150 Ext. Cab.

The cycling switch has a plastic fitting. If it has a metal fitting that is smaller that would be the high pressure cut off switch.

I changed the cycling switch and still have the problem. It gets very cold but after about 20 minutes or so while driving it go's warm for about a minute and then it gets very cold again. Could it be the high pressure cut off switch. Or possably something else.

Thanks

Ive seen this happen when a blend door controller is malfunctioning, but really you cannot afford to just keep popping on this and that... you need an accurate diagnosis WHEN the problem is occuring...

Thanks for all your help it's very appriciated. I am going on a trip on friday and I know that I can't get my truck in the shop for at least two weeks so I thought I would give it a try. I guess I will just have to live with it until I get back. Thanks Again.
