The ac in my 1991 f-150 stays cold for about 20 mins. Then it smells of moisture and it goes warm. If I turn it off for a minute and put it back on it comes back cold again. What is wrong?
It sounds like your low pressure switch is not working. When that happens the evaporator coil will get too cold and starts to freeze. After the coil freezes you can get a mildew smell and since the coil is frozen no air will go through. When you turn it off for a few minutes it allows the ice to melt and and the A\C system works fine until it starts to freeze again.
Is the drain plugged? If it is, the evaporator fins will freeze from the water in the bottom of the heater box being blown into the fins, and the air will blow warm. When you turn it off, the ice melts and the system cools again for another 20 minutes 'til it freezes up again.
Any accumulated moister in the bottom of the heater box will get stagnet and stink.
The drain should be located on the passenger's side lower firewall. Crawl under there with a piece of coathanger, or other flexible material and push it thru til it opens up.
Don't be jammin' it with too much vigor, or you'll be replacing the evaporator. It's usually a buildup of slime that clogs the drain, and not much force is needed to open it up. If water comes out, it was plugged.
thanks, ok so it sounds like the drain is behind the glovebox outside the passenger compartment? I'm looking at the haynes book and it doesn't seem to have a good pic of where exactly it is.
