I have a cracked driver side mirror on my 2004 F150 Screw XLT. The mirror is powered. I have purchased the mirror. Was hoping to get some installation tips here. How is the cracked mirror panel removed? Do I have to "pop off" the black outside mirror housing? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I believe the whole mirror assembly has to replaced. I had a loose mirror on my '04 FX4 and the service manager at my dealership told me that the individual mirror parts were not serviceable. He ordered a new driver's side mirror assembly and allowed me to install it myself so I didn't have to wait. The installation is not particularly difficult. Remove the door panel, remove three or four nuts on the mirror, unplug the old mirror and remove, plug in new mirror, bolt it up, and reinstall the door panel. I have oversimplified but the process is fairly self-evident once you get the door panel off.
On another vehicle, I've replaced just the mirror glass (got nailed by a street hockey puck). I gently pried off the cracked glass , which is held onto the movable backing plate by double-sided tape, and installed the replacement mirror. You shouldn't need to pop off any of the housing, in fact use the housing for leverage with cushioned flat-bladed screwdrivers on opposite sides of the mirror to pry the old glass off (tape the housing to make sure no scuff or scratch marks!). Piece o' cake! But, I'm not certain if our 150's mirrors are a similar installation. Sure would be cheaper to buy just the glass than the whole motorized assembly!!
I just finished replacing JUST the mirror portion of the side mirror assembly. I will say it is very tricky though. Using the motor to move the mirror, I rotated the mirror to access the snap fits on the back of the mirror. With a screwdriver and needlenose pliers, you can one by one relase the snap fits until the mirror will disengage. Putting on the new mirror is tricky too. I engaged the 2 top pairs of snap fits and rotated the mirror down with gentle pressure and the bottom 2 snapped in. It is scary putting thaat much pressure on the mirror. The mirror only cost me about $20, so it was worth the chance. When you look at the back of the new mirror, you'll see what I am talking about when I say "snap fit". Hope this helps someone.
